Somy Ali was born on March 25, 1976, is an actress, writer, filmmaker, model, and activist who is American-Pakistani and has experience in Bollywood movies. Since 2007, she has been the director of the nonprofit organisation No More Tears.

On March 25, 1976, Somy Ali was born in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, into a prosperous family. Her father, Madan, is Pakistani, and her mother, Tehmina, is from Iraq. She studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Karachi until she was nine years old, at which point she and her mother and brother relocated to South Florida.
In an interview, Ali disclosed that, while residing in Karachi, Pakistan, she had experienced sexual abuse at the ages of five and nine from domestic workers. After relocating to Florida, she was harassed at school and sexually assaulted by a seventeen-year-old guy in Miami when she was fourteen years old. Her brother and mother had to witness her mother’s abuse at the hands of her husband in Pakistan.

Inspired by her teenage romance, Bollywood actor Salman Khan, Ali persuaded her father to let her move to Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of sixteen after she dropped out of school. While in Mumbai, she participated in modelling assignments and gave appearances in Hindi films. Between 1991 and 1998, she starred alongside major Bollywood stars in ten Bollywood films. She dated Bollywood actor Salman Khan for eight years, starting in 1991 and ending in 1999. She went back to South Florida in December 1999 to finish her coursework.

Ali received her GED upon returning to Florida, where she enrolled at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, majoring in psychology and graduating in two years with her undergraduate degree. She also developed a strong interest in documentary filmmaking and journalism. She soon made the decision to pursue a master’s degree in broadcast journalism, psychology, and filmmaking at the University of Miami. She continued on to the New York Film Academy, where she earned a degree in scripting, editing, directing, and filmmaking. Among her initial endeavours were short films about teenage suicide, domestic abuse, and abortion. Later, she studied at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Florida, where she graduated in 2004 with a broadcast journalism credential.

Ali got interested in South Asian women’s rights problems. Her goal is to raise awareness about the predicament faced by victims of domestic abuse and rape. Ali has authored pieces on Shazia Khalid, Sonia Naz, and Mukhtaran Mai—victims of sexual assault. “My goal is to help all of these women and make sure that every girl/woman in my country and universally is able to obtain an education and has her basic human rights,” Ali states. She started No More Tears in 2007 as a non-profit organisation, and proceeds from her clothing business, So-Me Designs, go towards it.

President George H. W. Bush presented Ali with the Daily Point of Light Award on April 15, 2015, and President Barack Obama issued a proclamation during National Domestic Violence Month in recognition of her work with No More Tears. Ali was also awarded the American Heritage Award by the American Immigration Council in 2011 for her efforts with the initiative.Somy received the 2013 L’Oreal Woman of Worth Award laureate.
In the 2021 season of Fight or Flight on Discovery+, Ali and her nonprofit organisation No More Tears were highlighted.
