After helming the spiritual follow-up to Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Khaitan directed Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017). Shashank Khaitan was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Director for his efforts on the latter. In addition, he directed a scene from the anthology film Ajeeb Daastaans (2020) and the love drama Dhadak (2018). Shashank Khaitan started working as a producer for Dharma Productions in 2019; his first project was Good Newwz.

Shashank Khaitan Childhood

Khaitan was raised in Nashik, Maharashtra, by a Marwari business family after being born in Calcutta. At first, Khaitan was more engaged in sports, participating in tennis and cricket competitions. Shashank Khaitan made the decision to pursue a career in entertainment at the age of 17.

Shashank Khaitan was a dance instructor at first. He relocated to Mumbai shortly after. In an attempt to enter into the film business, Khaitan enrolled in Whistling Woods International Institute, a film school founded and backed by seasoned director Subhash Ghai. He acknowledges that the institute provided him with the technological grounding. Along with some of his fellow students at Whistling Woods, Khaitan worked on his debut film, Sherwani Kahaan Hai, but it was never finished.

In 2008, Khaitan helped on the sets of Ghai’s films Black & White and Yuvvraaj in addition to playing the role of Manohar in the 22-minute drama Roorkee By-Pass, directed by Arundhati Sen Verma . In Disney’s ABCD 2, a follow-up to the dance-drama ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, he also had a brief cameo.

Shashank Khaitan Career

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, a romantic comedy, marked Khaitan’s directorial debut. He originally intended for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to be a story about two con artists, a la Bunty Aur Babli, but the script ultimately turned into a tale about a flirty Punjabi kid who falls in love with an engaged Punjabi woman.

After completing the first draft of his script, Khaitan brought it to Dharma Productions, who agreed to produce it with a first-time writer-director at the helm under the title Humpty Sharma Di Love Story.

Khaitan credited Casablanca and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) for inspiring his storyline, and the movie itself honours both DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The movie received favourable reviews upon its July 11, 2014, release and made over ₹1.11 billion (US$14 million) in revenue globally.

The romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), which brought Khaitan and Dhawan back together, was his next project as director. It narrates the tale of a self-reliant young lady (Bhatt) who defies her conceited fiancée’s (Dhawan) patriarchal expectations. The New York Times’ Rachel Saltz noted the movie’s gender equality message. At the box office, the movie brought in over ₹2 billion (US$25 million), demonstrating its commercial success. Shashank Khaitan was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Director as a result.

In order to direct the Hindi version of John Green’s 2012 book The Fault in Our Stars for Dharma Productions, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter in the major roles, Khaitan co-wrote the script and dialogue in 2017. But after the production company decided not to proceed with the movie, he went on to direct them in Dhadak, which was a Marathi film Sairat (2016) that was released the next year. Despite the bad critiques Dhadak received for being a shoddy replica of the original and for ignoring caste-based discrimination, it became a commercial success, grossing over ₹1.1 billion (US$14 million) globally.

With the release of the horror movie Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship (2020) and the comedy Good Newwz (2019), which became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of the year, Khaitan transitioned to producing for Dharma Productions. Shashank Khaitan served as the director of the Majnu segment in the Netflix anthology Ajeeb Daastaans in 2021. Khaitan has wrapped with work on Govinda Naam Mera, a comedy-thriller starring Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani, and Bhumi Pednekar. The film is scheduled for release on June 10, 2022. Bedhadak, his upcoming film, has also been revealed. A movie he will write and produce as well.
