Mahua Moitra is an Indian politician and an investment banker who was born on October 12, 1974. As the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party’s candidate from Krishnanagar, she won the 2019 Indian general election. From 2019 to 2023, she was a member of the Lok Sabha.
On December 8, 2023, Moitra was removed from the Lok Sabha and disqualified for accepting bribes because of her involvement in the “Cash for Query” corruption scandal.

From 2016 to 2019, Moitra represented Karimpur as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. For the previous few years, she also held the positions of general secretary and national spokesman for the AITC. Moitra was named AITC District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North) on November 13, 2023. Before going into politics, she worked as an investment banker at JPMorgan Chase.

On October 12, 1974, Moitra was born in Labac, in the Assamese district of Cachar, to Dwipendra Lal Moitra. She has a sister and comes from a Bengali Hindu Brahmin household.

Moitra attended the Kolkata-based Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School. In 1998, she earned her degrees in mathematics and economics from Mount Holyoke College South Hadley in Massachusetts.
Moitra was employed by JPMorgan Chase as an investment banker in both London and New York City.
Mahua Moitra Career In Politics
In order to pursue a career in Indian politics, she left her role as vice president at JPMorgan Chase in London in 2009. She then joined the Indian young Congress, the party’s young branch of the Indian National Congress, where Rahul Gandhi counted her as one of his reliable hands for the “Aam Admi Ka Sipahi” project.
She joined the All India Trinamool Congress party in 2010. She was chosen in the 2016 Legislative Assembly elections from the Karimpur constituency in the Nadia district of West Bengal. She was chosen to represent Krishnanagar, West Bengal, in the 17th Lok Sabha as a member of parliament.
She was named the TMC party’s Goa in-charge on November 13, 2021, with the responsibility of preparing the party to run in the Goa Legislative Assembly election in 2022.

In response to Babul Supriyo, a Union Minister and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, reportedly “insulting her modesty” during a national television debate, Moitra lodged a police complaint on January 10, 2017. The Calcutta High Court later dismissed the complaint. A few days later, TMC MPs Saugata Roy and Tapas Paul, as well as Moitra, received legal notifications from Babul Supriyo accusing them of defaming him by linking him to the Rose Valley ponzi company scheme.
Zed Media launched a defamation action against Moitra in January 2020 after it was said that she made disparaging remarks about the channel in an interview with reporters. A Delhi Court granted her bail and held a trial. The allegations against her were ultimately dropped after she prevailed in the lawsuit.

On June 26, 2019, Moitra identified seven precursors of fascism, which she asserts are evident in India under the leadership of Narendra Modi. The constitution, which each MP has pledged to uphold, is currently in danger, according to her. She referred to the press as “2 paisa” in December 2020, which led to harsh criticism and a boycott by the local news media. Her party disassociated itself from what she said.
“The sacred cow that was the judiciary is no longer sacred. It stopped being sacred the day a sitting chief justice of this country was accused of sexual harassment, presided over his own trial, cleared himself, and then proceeded to accept the nomination to the upper house within three months of retirement, replete with Z+ security cover,” Moitra said, criticising the judiciary and the current government in the parliament on February 8, 2021.
Because the speech identified a person in “high authority,” members of the ruling party criticised it as “objectionable” and said it violated parliamentary rules. This generated a huge commotion in the house. The speech was backed by opposition members because it was based on publicly available facts.
Eventually, the comments were removed from the archives. Leaders of the BJP, Nishikant Dubey and PP Chowdhary, moved a privilege notice against Moitra on February 11, 2021.
Mahua Moitra claimed in the parliament on April 7, 2022, that the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill, 2022 is even more invasive than the Indian legislation pertaining to colonial surveillance.
The ‘Kaali’ Dispute
At the India Today Conclave East on July 5, 2022, Moitra reacted to a movie poster featuring the goddess Kali smoking a cigarette by saying, “Kaali is a goddess who accepts alcohol and eats meat.” You are free to conjure up your deity. In certain regions, whisky is offered to the gods, but in others, it is considered sacrilege.
Her party, All India Trinamool Congress, distanced itself from the incident by releasing a statement criticising Moitra’s comments and stating that “her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are not endorsed by the party in any manner or form.” The Bengal BJP then lodged police complaints against Moitra in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, and five West Bengal districts, including Kolkata.
Mahua Moitra “Cash for Query” And Removal From The Legislature
Attorney for the Supreme Court Jai Anant Dehadrai filed a case and FIR with the CBI on October 14, 2023, accusing Moitra of money laundering and corruption. A copy was also sent to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who passed the information to the parliament’s Ethics Committee.
Dehadrai claims that in exchange for Moitra asking pointed questions in parliament about Adani, Darshan Hiranandani, the head of an Adani Group rival firm, gave Moitra money and benefits. On October 19, 2023, Hiranandani changed his status to approver. He then stated in an affidavit that Moitra had really received favours and granted him access to her website account so he could ask inquiries on her behalf.
In response, Moitra refuted these claims and said she would be open to any form of investigation by the CBI or the parliamentary ethics committee.
In October, Moitra acknowledged that she had in fact provided Hiranandani her parliamentary login credentials “for typing questions” and that she had accepted presents from him, but referred to him as a “personal friend” rather than as a recipient of scarves or lipsticks.
The parliamentary ethics tribunal recommended her removal from the Lok Sabha on November 9, 2023. As per the recommendation in the report by the Parliamentary Committee on Ethics, the Lok Sabha voted on December 8, 2023, to remove Moitra from the chamber.

Lars Brorson, a Danish financier, was Moitra’s husband; they eventually got divorced. Before they broke up, she was dating advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai for around three years.
