Indian actress Paoli Dam was born in 1980 and began her career with the Bengali television series Jibon Niye Khela (2003). Subsequently, she contributed to Bengali TV shows including Sonar Harin and Tithir Atithi, the former of which aired on ETV Bangla for six years.

Paoli Dam was born and raised in Kolkata, where she also completed her graduation studies in chemistry at Rajabazar Science College. She originally intended to work as a pilot or a chemical researcher. Her first Bengali film, Teen Yaari Katha, which was helmed by Abhijit Guha and Sudeshna Roy, started production in 2004 but wasn’t released until 2012. Ravi Kinagi’s Agnipariksha was Dam’s debut feature film. She starred in five Bengali films between 2006 and 2009; however, Goutam Ghose’s 2009 film Kaalbela brought her notoriety.

Paoli Dam was born into a Bengali family, originally from Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), in Kolkata, West Bengal. Amol is her mother, and Papiya Dam is her father. Mainak is her brother as well.
Dam studied in Bowbazar’s Loreto School before passing the Higher Secondary Examination. She excelled academically and was awarded scholarships. Admitted to the University of Calcutta’s Vidyasagar College, Dam went on to earn a degree in chemistry from there. She graduated with a postgraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Calcutta’s Rajabazar Science College Campus.

I Love You, Dam’s third Bengali film release, featured her in a supporting role as the friend of the main heroine. The actress starred as a Bengali housewife in Basu Chatterjee’s comedy of errors, Hochheta Ki, which was released in 2008.
From 2009 to 2011
2009 saw Dam feature in seven Bengali films before gaining prominence with the release of Goutam Ghose’s Kaalbela. The 1980s Naxalite uprising served as the backdrop for the film, which was based on a Bengali novel by Samaresh Majumdar. Dam received appreciation for her portrayal of Madhabilata, a young Naxalite leader’s sweetheart. According to Dam, the movie marked a “turning point” in her career. “Everyone needs a platform, and Kalbela gave me mine,” she stated in an interview. I had to establish my worth. 2011 saw Dam’s film debut with Chatrak, which was helmed by Vimukthi Jayasundara of Sri Lanka. The film caused controversy in India when an explicit unstimulated no-body-double-sex scene starring the actress as Paoli, a Bengali girl, was posted online starring Dam and Anubrata Basu.
2012 to the present
In addition to appearing in three Bengali films, including Bedroom (directed by Mainak Bhaumik), Elar Char Adhyay (directed by Bappaditya Bandyopadhyay), and Teen Yaari Katha (the actress’s debut film appearance, directed by Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha), Dam’s first Hindi film, Hate Story, was released in 2012. The plot of Bedroom focused on the lifestyles of metropolitan couples in Kolkata; Dam portrayed Priyanka, a disgruntled and restless housewife.
Elar Char Adhyay, which took place in 1940s British Raj India, was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s novel Char Adhyay. Ela, a teacher for an organisation fighting for Indian independence, was portrayed by Dam. The actor, who portrayed a supporting character in Teen Yaari Katha, received appreciation for her acting.
Dam was featured in the Family Album of Mainak Bhaumik as well. The MMS controversy is the subject of the movie, which also stars Swastika Mukherjee.
Dam starred in Chaya Manush in 2014. In the Arindam De-directed movie, she portrayed journalist Trisha. Dam appeared in Birsa Dasgupta’s Obhishopto Nighty (cursed nighty) later that year. In the comedy-romantic movie, Dam portrayed Miss Monica, a Bengali pub singer from the 1980s. Dam defined her as “practical, grounded, and not driven by emotions” in Hercules. She starred as Deepa, a Kolkata-based ad agency employee who is “lost in depression amongst all the affluence” in Anjan Das’ debut 2015 film, Ajana Batash.
Dam has three films coming up: Auroni Taukhon (Saurav Chakraborty), a love story set against the backdrop of communal riots; Debesh Chattopadhyay’s Natoker Moto – Like a Play (which Dam describes as a “fictional biopic of a famous actress of the Bengali stage during the 1970s”); and Swarup Ghosh’s romantic comedy Tobuo Aparichito.
Paoli Dam Bollywood Profession
Dam debuted in Bollywood in the 2012 film Hate Story, which was produced and directed by Vikram Bhatt and Vivek Agnihotri. The film had female leads, with Dam portraying sex worker Kavyah Krishna. In the movie, she pulls off a caper alongside her pal Vicky against one of the largest business tycoons in India.

2012 saw Dam start production on Laxmikant Shetgaonkar’s Konkani film Baga Beach. In an interview, the actress stated, “I enjoy working on a variety of cinematic projects. I got to know Laxmikant Shetgaonkar during the 2011 Cannes film festival, and I was impressed by his script for Baga Beach when I heard it later. I had imagined that working on a Konkani film would be an incredibly special opportunity. And I reasoned that dedicating 15 to 20 days to a film is not much.
