Sabyasachi Mukherjee Biography

Childhood

Sabyasachi is from a Bengali Brahmin family of middle class origin. His parents left what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) for India in 1947.[4] Sabyasachi hails from West Bengal’s Kakinara initially. He had his early schooling at Chandannagar’s Sri Aurobindo Vidyamandir.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee Career

Sabyasachi Mukerjee received her diploma from the National Institute of Fashion Technology India in the summer of 1999. Sabyasachi Mukherjee launched his own brand four months later, employing just three people at first. He was given the opportunity to intern with Salisbury-based eclectic designer Georgina von Etzdorf in London after winning the Femina British Council’s Most Outstanding Young Designer of India award in 2001 . After returning home with ideas, Sabyasachi began selling at all of India’s big retailers.

His 2005 spring/summer “The Nair Sisters” collection drew heavily from cotton and other hand-woven textiles, hand block printing, embroidery, and bagru prints. The collection was offered for sale in London’s Browns & Selfridges. He received an invitation to present his creations at Oxford University’s esteemed annual black tie charity dinner fashion show.

After receiving positive reviews for his debut Spring Summer collection’07 during New York Fashion Week in 2006, Sabyasachi’s brand began to sell all over the world. This collection’s core elements included modern architecture, glamour, simplicity, folklore, and exquisite craftsmanship.

The famous painter Frida Kahlo, who served as the designer’s inspiration for the Grand Finale at WIFW Autumn-Winter 2011, when the models walked the ramp donning wire-rimmed glasses and rose-colored headbands reminiscent of Kahlo, was dressed up as the Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia in 2012 for the calendar.

For the show, eighty pairs of shoes were made, one for each gender, all adorned with hand-placed sequins and the iconic Sabyasachi embroidery. For the collection, Louboutin also altered his iconic Victoria heel to incorporate the distinctive Sabyasachi needlework using burnt zardozi that had been acid-dyed and an old Parsi gara.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee Design philosophy

“Personalised imperfection of the human hand” is the design ethos of Sabyasachi. This designer, who feels that “clothes should just be an extension of one’s intellect,” has drawn inspiration from a variety of sources throughout his life, including deserts, gipsies, prostitutes, antique textiles, and the cultural customs of his hometown of Kolkata.

He makes use of unique textiles, texturizing and detailing, combining different designs, and patchwork with colourful ornaments. His works conjure up visions of the ancient and mediaeval periods. His personal collections, according to him, have “an Indian soul with an international styling.”

Sabyasachi Mukherjee Initiatives

Mukherjee launched a concept called Save the Saree, through which he sells hand-woven Indian sarees for $3,500 at a non-profit store. All proceeds go to the Murshidabad weavers. Superstars in the film business like Vidya Balan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also firmly support this project. He has been creating textiles from Kotpadin, Orissa, Tantubay Samiti, Fulia, Berozghar Mahili Samiti, and Dastkarin, Andhra Pradesh. The designer incorporates a lot of Banarasi fabric—one of the most luxurious Indian textiles—into his collection. He has also been working on bringing back cotton Benarasi sarees from Bagru with hand block patterns made entirely of vegetables and khadi for the past two years.

He has since created the designs for several additional Bollywood films, including English Vinglish, Baabul, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Raavan, Guzaarish, Paa, and No One Killed Jessica.

For Bollywood star Vidya Balan’s wedding, Sabyasachi created a trousseau collection consisting of about eighteen handcrafted sarees. He specifically obtained the silk from Chennai for the ensemble. Additionally, Vidya Balan donned seven of his ensembles for her public appearances while participating in the Cannes competition jury panel.
