The next year, Wasim landed her big break in the musical drama Secret Superstar (2017), which Advait Chandan directed and which told the tale of 15-year-old Wasim’s dream to become a singer. With Aamir Khan, Meher Vij, and Raj Arjun in supporting roles, Wasim’s performance won her praise from critics. The movie went on to become her second consecutive hit, grossing over ₹9 billion (US$110 million) globally, making it the third highest-grossing Indian film (behind Dangal and 2015’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan) and the highest-grossing Indian film with a female lead.

Zaira Wasim Retirement

Zaira Wasim Disputes

Wasim’s cropped hair was visible in promotional images of her from the 2016 movie Dangal. She was thus subjected to internet trolling for being “un-Islamic” by participating in a motion picture. A local news outlet released pictures and information about her encounter with Mehbooba Mufti, the then-chief minister, in January 2017. The fact that Mufti had called Wasim a “Kashmiri role model” led to more condemnation and threats of death for Wasim . Zaira apologised on Facebook and Instagram in response, but she quickly erased the posts. But not before the news media took notice of the message and made it public, which fueled the dispute even more. Afterwards, a number of Indian celebrities defended Wasim and denounced her detractors.

The tweet “Our daughters are breaking out of their cages and moving forward” was sent by Indian sports minister Vijay Goel in January 2017. It included a picture of Goel standing in front of a painting that showed two women, one cowering in a cage and the other wearing a hijab. Wasim replied to Goel, asking him to refrain from associating her with “such a discourteous depiction” and highlighting the “beautiful and free” nature of women wearing hijabs. In response, Goel said that she had misread his tweet, that he valued Wasim’s contributions, and that he was trying to dissuade “evil and patriarchal notions”.

Wasim claimed to have experienced harassment while in midair on Vistara flight UK 981 from Delhi to Mumbai in December 2017. She claimed in a series of posts on her Instagram site that she was sleeping when the man seated behind her on the plane touched her neck with his foot. She also noted that the low light prevented her from recording what the man was doing. The airline apologised and said in a statement that a thorough investigation will be carried out. Since Wasim was a legal juvenile, the accused, Vikas Sachdeva of Chandivli in Mumbai, was later taken into custody and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

The accused’s spouse stated that her husband had been sleeping when his leg unintentionally brushed Wasim. The actress agreed that her husband had apologised before boarding the aircraft in the Mumbai airport. The accused individual was detained by the authorities until their court appearance. The accused has received support from his neighbours through a signature campaign and from groups on social media such as “Justice for Vikas Sachdeva.

After that, Wasim was the object of online teasing, for which the Mumbai Police expressed disapproval in a tweet, saying, “It is every victim’s constitutional right to report sexual abuse and our duty to take cognizance, investigate & facilitate justice.” Please abstain from passing judgement and #Respect the Right of a Sexual Assault Victim. The Mumbai Police also said in a statement that was attached to the tweet, “Our action against the accused is backed by sufficient evidence against him and it has been under the scrutiny by the court of law.” The defendant was convicted guilty of abusing Wasim in January 2020 and given a three-year prison sentence. The sentence was suspended pending the outcome of the accused’s Bombay High Court appeal being heard.
