Born on September 7, 1953, Lillete Dubey is an Indian actress and director of theater. She has performed in Hindi and English-language films, television shows, and theater both domestically and abroad. In Delhi, Dubey started her career working for Barry John. In 1973, she became a founding member of his theater organization, Theatre Action organization. She founded The Primetime Theatre group, her own theater group, in 1991.

On September 7, 1953, in Pune, Dubey was born Lillete Keswani to Sindhi Hindu parents. Her mother, Lila Keswani, was a gynecologist from Lady Harding who later worked with the Indian Army, and her father, Gobind Keswani, was an engineer with the Indian Railways. The family relocated to Bikaner and then Lucknow when Dubey was born. There, she attended Loreto Convent before continuing her education at Rustom Boarding School in Pune.
She moved to Delhi and enrolled in Carmel Convent after Rustoms. The family relocated to Pune while she was in Class IX, and she enrolled at St. Mary’s (Pune), where she began acting for the first time. She obtained her second master’s degree in mass communications from IIMC and her master’s degree in English from LSR.

In 1978, Lillete Dubey wed Ravi Dubey. In 2015, pancreatic cancer claimed Ravi Dubey’s life. Neha Dubey and Ira Dubey, the couple’s two daughters, have both appeared in a number of minor and supporting parts in theater, movies, and television.

Lillete Dubey has frequently referred to herself as a “accidental film actress,” citing her husband’s 1995 posting to Mumbai as the reason for her inadvertent foray into the film industry. In 1999, she made her feature film debut in Love You Hamesha, costarring Akshaye Khanna and Sonali Bendre. Director Kailash Surendranath made the film. Following that, in 2000, she portrayed a supporting role in Jag Mundhra’s Bawandar, which starred Nandita Das.

In 2003, she portrayed Jaswinder “Jazz” Kapoor in the film Kal Ho Naa Ho. She portrayed an aging, strong, unrepentant, and sexually aware character named Jazz. She portrayed Preity Zinta’s reel mother in the 2004 film Lakshya. Farhan Akhtar directed the movie, which stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead role. Additionally, Dubey founded the esteemed Theatre Action Group in Delhi.
Dubey has directed 33 shows for The Primetime Theatre Co. since co-founding the organization in 1991 with the goal of fostering original Indian writing.
Under the direction of Ms. Dubey, the productions of the Prime Time Theatre Company have toured extensively throughout India and overseas. In the United States, they have been seen in Chicago, San Francisco, Raleigh (North Carolina), Los Angeles, Boston, and New York; in London, they have been presented at the Bloomsbury Theatre; in New York, at the Tribecca; and at the Portland International Performance Festival.
