In Hyderabad, Tilak Varma was born on November 8, 2002, into a Telugu-speaking household. His mother Gayatri Devi is a homemaker, and his father Namboori Nagaraju was an electrician. Tarun Varma is his elder brother.

Coach Salim Bayash saw Tilak Varma, then eleven years old, playing tennis ball cricket, which sparked his early interest in the game. Tilak Varma was trained at the Legala Cricket Academy in Lingampally under the guidance of Bayash. Until Varma’s family moved closer to the academy, Bayash would ride his scooter from his house to his academy and back, a distance of more than forty kilometres each time.

On September 28, 2019, he played for Hyderabad in the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, making his List A debut. Tilak Varma collected four wickets and scored 180 runs in five games during the competition.
Tilak Varma was added to India’s 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad in December 2019. In the six games he participated in the competition, he scored a mere 86 runs.
In five games of the 2021–22 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he amassed 180 runs and claimed four wickets.

Tilak Varma was acquired by the Mumbai Indians in February 2022 during the Indian Premier League 2022 auction. Tilak Varma was purchased by the Mumbai Indians for Rs. 1.7 crore, with a base price of Rs. 20 lakh. Tilak Varma hit a 33-ball-61 against the Rajasthan Royals in the league’s opening game at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium.
In their opening 2023 Indian Premier League encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore in April 2023, he struck an innings of 84 off 46 balls. Against Gujarat Titans in the playoffs, he scored 43 runs off of just 14 balls.

Tilak Varma received his first call-up to the Indian cricket squad in July 2023 for the T20I series while on tour in the West Indies. In the opening game of the series on August 3, 2023, he made his T20I debut. With 39 runs off of just 22 deliveries, he set a new record for India and also grabbed two catches in the same game.

Tilak Varma reached his first fifty in an international match on August 6, 2023, during the second Twenty20 encounter against the West Indies. After Rohit Sharma, he became the second-youngest Indian to register fifty in Men’s T20I. During the tour, he also scored the most runs for the squad.
Additionally, he has been included in the Indian squads for the 2022 Asian Games, which will take place in Hangzhou, China, and the three-match T20I tour of Ireland . On September 15, 2023, he played his first ODI match against Bangladesh during the 2023 Asia Cup.
