In a Muslim Indian household, Munawar Faruqui was born on January 28, 1992, in Junagadh, Gujarat. After his home was destroyed in the Gujarat communal riots of 2002, his family relocated to Mumbai, and when he was only 13 years old, his mother passed away not long after.

When his father became ill when he was 13 years old, he was forced to labour for his family. On his tour, Munawar Faruqui was giving comedic performances in various Indian towns. Eklavya Singh Gaur, the son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, interrupted his stand-up performance at the Munro Cafe in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on January 1, 2021, accusing him of making slanderous jokes about Hindu deities and Indian Home Minister Amit Shah.
He was detained on January 2 by the Madhya Pradesh Police while performing a comedic performance, and they claimed that they had detained him due to India’s laws against hate speech. Despite the lack of proof against Munawar, the police nonetheless detained him.
