Gautam relocated to Mumbai at the age of 20 in order to pursue a career in film. In Chand Ke Paar Chalo, she made her TV debut. In Raajkumar Aaryyan, she kept playing the prominent role. In Shoojit Sircar’s romantic comedy Vicky Donor (2012), Gautam made her Bollywood debut in the starring role following her acting debut in the 2009 Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. She played Ashima Roy, a Bengali woman who falls in love with the title character, a Punjabi boy from the Arora family, and learns about his background after their marriage.
She costarred opposite debutante Ayushmann Khurrana, Annu Kapoor, and Dolly Ahluwalia. The movie, which was the first production of Bollywood actor John Abraham, was well-received by reviewers and went on to become one of the year’s highest-grossing films with a global box office total of ₹645 million (US$3.9 million). Gautam played Pallavi Sharma, an ex-nurse who became an intelligence officer, in the 2016 Uri incident. In 2021, Gautam portrayed Maya in the horror comedy Bhoot Police directed by Pavan Kirpalani, which also starred Arjun Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, and Jacqueline Fernandez. The second character Gautam took on was that of flight attendant Neha Grover in the heist thriller Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga.
