Sen and Shilpa Shetty were the subject of non-bailable warrants issued by a Madurai court in April 2006 for “posing in an obscene manner” in pictures that were published by Sun Group-owned Tamil tabloid Dinakaran. According to the article, the warrants were issued because the two actresses had disregarded previous summonses for the same reason. The petitioner claimed that the publication had published “very sexy blow-ups and medium blow-ups” in its issues from December 2005 to January 2006,

in violation of the Indian Penal Code Section 292 (Sale of Obscene Books), the Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1956, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986. In addition, the petitioner requested that the pictures be seized in accordance with the Press and Registration of Book Act of 1867.

Chief Justice Y. K. Sabharwal, who was leaving the bench in January 2007, acknowledged that Sen had written to him to lay down standards against baseless lawsuits against artists. However, Sabharwal turned down Sen’s plea, stating that she had to have submitted a formal petition rather than a letter.
