Ali Fazal is an Indian actor who was born on October 15, 1986. Before making an appearance in the American television miniseries Bollywood Hero (2009), he had a brief role in the English-language film The Other End of the Line (2008).

After appearing in a supporting part in 3 Idiots (2009), he made his Hindi cinema debut in Bobby Jasoos (2014), Baat Ban Gayi (2013), and Always Kabhi Kabhi (2011).

His roles in the comedy Fukrey (2013), Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016), and Fukrey Returns (2017) brought him more success. He also ventured into foreign film with a cameo in Furious 7 (2015) and a leading part as Abdul Karim in Victoria & Abdul (2017). Since then, he has acted in the Hollywood blockbusters Death on the Nile (2022) and Kandahar (2023), as well as the murder thriller series Mirzapur on Amazon Prime Video (2018–present). Alongside Tabu and Wamiqa Gabbi, Ali plays Ravi Mohan in the first-ever Netflix film Khufiya (2023).

Ali Fazal Early Life

Ali Fazal was raised in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, after being born in Sir Gangaram Hospital in Delhi. Ali Fazal attended International Indian School, Dammam, for a very short time. In addition, he attended La Martiniere College in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, before relocating to The Doon School, an all-boys residential school in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Ali Fazal started acting at Doon and was involved in numerous Founder’s Day theatre plays. In William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, he is claimed to have “found his calling” as the jester Trinculo. Following Doon, Fazal attended St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, where he earned his economics degree.

Ali Fazal Career

2008–2011: Early work In the romantic comedy The Other End of the Line (2008), directed by James Dodson, Fazal had a brief role. Both critically and financially, the movie was a disaster. His next appearance was as Monty Kapoor in the 2009 American television miniseries Bollywood Hero. Saeed Akhtar Mirza cast him in the lead role of the sensual thriller Ek Tho Chance (2009), opposite Saurabh Shukla and Amrita Arora, after seeing him in a performance during his sophomore year of college The film concentrated on the comedy and reality of Mumbai living. The movie made its debut at Kerala’s 14th International Film Festival.

Taking inspiration from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, Rajkumar Hirani’s National Film Award-winning film 3 Idiots marked Fazal’s Bollywood debut that same year. Ali Fazal was performing in a play at Juhu’s Prithvi Theatre when he was spotted by someone from the movie’s production team, who then put him in touch with Hirani. Alongside Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in a co-starring role, Fazal portrayed Joy Lobo, an engineering student. After earning critical praise and ₹3,920 million (US$49 million) at the box office globally, the movie became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.

Red Chillies Entertainment, Shah Rukh Khan’s production company, selected Fazal for the 2011 romantic film Always Kabhi Kabhi, which was directed by Roshan Abbas. Fazal, who plays Sameer Khanna opposite Giselli Monteiro, had to shed fifteen kilogrammes to prepare for the part. The movie was a box office disaster and had mixed reviews from reviewers. Although Fazal performed passably, according to Komal Nahta of Koimoi, Gaurav Malani of The Times of India rated him as the best of the cast. Fazal later stated in an interview that deciding to make the movie was a bad idea.

2013–present: Advancement in one’s career

In the coming-of-age comedy Fukrey, Fazal made his screen debut in 2013 playing the part of struggling musician Zafar. The reviews for the movie and his performance were not quite unanimous. Rediff.com’s Nishi Tiwari claimed he had a “dazed expression” the entire movie, while NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee thought his part was “underwritten” .

In what was regarded as a parody of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, Fazal starred in the romantic comedy Baat Bann Gayi that same year. Ali Fazal played the parts of Rasiya Bihari, a local don, and Kabir, a prominent Singaporean novelist. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics and a poor opening weekend, Fazal’s performance in the movie was lauded. The Times of India confirmed that he is “standing out” among the cast, and Faheem Ruhani of India Today regarded him as an up-and-coming talent to “watch out for”.

By 2021, he was producing. Together with Richa Chadha, he founded Pushing Buttons Studios, his own film production firm.

Ali Fazal Individual Life

Fazal, a devout Muslim, underwent the Umrah in January 2022. On Instagram, he posted about his trip to Medina and Mecca.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of their marriage preparations, Fazal was in a relationship with Richa Chadha. Ali Fazal and Chadha declared their engagement on September 23, 2022, along with the details of their eco-friendly wedding. They tied the knot in a ceremony in Lucknow on October 4, 2022.

Due to health issues, Fazal’s mother passed away in Lucknow on June 17, 2020 . Grandfather of Ali Fazal passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Additional projects and media representation

Fazal participated in a Cancerthon in February 2015, which was arranged by NDTV and Fortis to collect money for kids with cancer and to promote awareness of the illness. However, he has since quit the job. Fazal took part in a musical performance with Tochi Raina to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal. Fazal included in The Times of India’s 2014 edition of their “Most Desirable Man” list. At the 2019 BFJA (Bollywood Film Journalists’ Awards), Power Brands presented Fazal with the “Power Brand: Industry Trendsetter” award.
