Manisha Koirala born in Nepal on August 16, 1970, is an actress that primarily works in Hindi and Tamil films in India. She is well-known for her contributions to independent and commercial film, and she has won multiple awards, including three Filmfare Awards and one Filmfare Award South. She was given the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu by the Nepali government in 2001.

She was raised in the well-known Koirala family in politics. Her father is Prakash Koirala, and her grandmother is Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, a former prime minister of Nepal. After making her screen debut in the 1989 Nepali film Pheri Bhetaula, Koirala went on to star in the 1991 Hindi drama Saudagar. She became a leading actress after a string of box office busts with the romance plays 1942: A Love Story (1994) and the Tamil-language Bombay (1995). Following that, she acted in a string of financially successful films, such as Company (2002), Ek Chhotisi Love Story (2002), Agni Sakshi (1996), Indian (1996), Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997), Kachche Dhaage (1999), Mudhalvan (1999), and Company (2002).

1970–1993: Formative years and the start of a career

In Biratnagar, Nepal, Manisha Koirala was born into the well-known Koirala family in politics. Her mother, Sushma Koirala, stays at home while her father, Prakash Koirala, is a politician, former Cabinet minister, and former member of Nepal’s House of Representatives. Siddharth Koirala, a former Bollywood actor, is her brother.

Her grandfather, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, and two of her great-uncles, Girija Prasad Koirala and Matrika Prasad Koirala, served as prime minister of Nepal from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Several other members of her family also became politicians. Koirala was born and raised in India. She later resided in Delhi and Mumbai, after spending a few years at the home of her maternal grandmother in Varanasi.

She starred in the Neeraj Udhwani-directed Netflix original movie Maska in 2020.

She made an appearance in the love musical 99 Songs by AR Rahman in 2021. After that, she starred in Geeta Malik’s American comedy flick India Sweets & Spices. Based on Geeta Malik’s screenplay “Dinner With Friends,” which was awarded the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting, the movie was made.

She made an appearance in the action-drama Shehzada in 2023. Despite the fact that the movie was a financial disaster, her performance was well received.

Following her cancer treatment in May 2013, Koirala declared her intention to use her celebrity profile and personal narrative to encourage those facing the feared disease. “My goal going forward is to assist those who may require some guidance,” she stated during her initial interview following her cancer treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. After overcoming cancer, she turned into a motivational speaker and now speaks at hospitals, schools, and other organisations on a range of subjects.

Her appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Bagmati Cleanup Mega Campaign, which aims to clean the Bagmati River, came from Nepal’s Ministry of Urban Development in 2017.

She co-wrote the book Healed, which tells the tale of her struggle with ovarian cancer.

With the help of Global College International, Kathmandu, she established the “Manisha Koirala Cancer Education Fund” in 2020 to provide educational scholarships to underprivileged children whose parents have been affected by cancer. Her accomplishments in the film industry and social activity have elevated her to one of the most well-known Nepalis worldwide.

She voted in favour of the pro-monarchy Rashtriya Prajatantra Party in the general election of Nepal in 2022.
