English singer and songwriter Zain Javadd Malik (/ˈmaelɪk/ MAL-ik; born January 12, 1993) is better known by his stage name Zayn Malik or just Zayn. In 2010, Malik made a solo audition for the British music competition TV show The X Factor.

Zayn Malik was welcomed back into the competition after being eliminated to create One Direction, a five-piece boy band that went on to become one of the all-time best-selling boy bands. In March 2015, he announced his departure from the group and inked a solo recording deal with RCA Records.
With his debut solo studio album, Mind of Mine (2016), and its lead single, “Pillowtalk,” he adopted a more alternative R&B sound, making history as the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and the US. His next two joint tracks, “Dusk Till Dawn” with Sia and “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” with Taylor Swift, became worldwide hits. Icarus Falls, his second studio album, was released in 2018, and Nobody Is Listening, his third album, was published in 2021.
Malik is the recipient of multiple awards, such as the MTV Video Music Award and the American Music Award. As a part of One Direction in 2013 and as a solo artist in 2017, he is the only musician to have won the Billboard Music Award for New Artist of the Year twice.
Zayn Malik Childhood
On January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Zayn Malik was born Zain Javadd Malik. Her parents, Yaser Malik, a Pakistani immigrant, and Trisha Malik (née Brannan), a White British woman of English and Irish ancestry, converted to Islam after getting married. Malik has two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa, and one older sister, Doniya.
Malik was up in a working-class household and community in East Bowling, Bradford . In Bradford, he went to Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School, which is now Tong Leadership Academy. Zayn Malik participated in school plays and attended performing arts classes as a teenager. He grew up listening to R&B, hip hop, and reggae recordings that his father had collected in the urban music genre.
He started writing raps while in school, and when singer Jay Sean paid his school a visit, he sang on stage for the first time. For two years, between the ages of 15 and 17, Malik also boxed. Zayn Malik planned to get an academic degree in English with the goal of becoming an English teacher before starting his music career.
Zayn Malik Career
2010–2015: One Direction and The X Factor
Malik, at 17 years old, went to Manchester to try out for the seventh season of The X Factor, a reality TV show, in 2010. Malik grew anxious the morning of the audition and refused to go; however, his mother eventually had him get out of bed and talked him into coming. Zayn Malik performed Mario’s “Let Me Love You” during his audition, and he advanced to the following round. When Malik went to audition for The X Factor, he said he was “looking for an experience”.

A week subsequently, on March 25, 2015, the group declared his exit. In the group’s formal statement, Malik expressed his wish to lead a “regular 22-year-old life who can unwind and spend some alone time away from the limelight” and refuted reports that there was discord amongst the members, saying that everyone had supported the choice. Though Malik acknowledged that “there was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band” and that “if I would sing a hook or a verse that was slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, “he expressed his dissatisfaction with the group’s musical direction in an interview with The Fader from December 2015.
Mind of Mine and Icarus Falls, 2015–2019
Malik was spotted in March 2015 with producer Naughty Boy in a recording facility in London. Malik hinted at the possibility of pursuing a solo career after leaving One Direction, releasing his debut solo studio album under the Syco label in 2016. In the same month, Naughty Boy posted an early version of Malik’s song “I Won’t Mind” to SoundCloud. Rapper Mic Righteous from the UK released Malik’s cover of Rae Sremmurd’s hip-hop song “No Type” in June 2015. The song features Mic Righteous and was produced by Naughty Boy. During this period, Malik collaborated with grime rappers Krept & Konan. The song was never released following Malik’s breakup with Naughty Boy.
For the 2019 Aladdin movie remake’s soundtrack, Malik and Zhavia Ward did a cover of “A Whole New World” in 2019. On May 17, Malik and Becky G’s multilingual English and Spanish rendition of “Un Mundo Ideal” was made available. Zayn Malik and Aitana gave a whole Spanish rendition. A remix of “Trampoline,” a song by indie pop group Shaed, featuring vocals by Malik, was released on September 26. Zayn Malik collaborated once more after that, writing and recording the electropop song “Flames” with British DJ Jungleboi and Dutch DJ and producer R3hab. November 15th was the song’s release date.
2020–Present: There’s Room Under the Stairs and No One Is Listening
With “Better” serving as the lead single from his third studio album Nobody Is Listening, Malik released the song on September 25, 2020. It was his first solo release in almost a full year. The album was referred to as “his most personal project to date” by Malik. On January 8, 2021, a new song called “Vibez” was made available for pre-order along with the album. On January 15, one week later, the album was made available.
Malik published a trio of songs, “Grimez,” “Believe Me,” and “47 11” collectively titled Yellow Tape, on Dropbox on September 13, 2021. The songs’ adoption of the classic hip-hop sound signalled a shift in his approach to music. RCA fired Malik from their label in October 2021.
In an interview with Rolling Stone on February 28, 2024, American record producer Dave Cobb disclosed that he was collaborating closely with Zayn on his upcoming album. He stated, “What struck me about Zayn was his voice; you can hear love, loss, pain, triumph, and humanity in it.” This record seems to be him taking the glass out of his spirit and giving it to his audience.
