The movie received a bad review from critics[17] and did poorly at the box office. Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta accused Agnihotri of acting inappropriately during the making of the movie in 2018. During a close-up, he reportedly requested her to strip and dance in order to provide her male co-star Irrfan Khan expression cues. He only withdrew after Irrfan and Suniel Shetty rejected him. Declaring the accusations “false and frivolous,” Agnihotri sued Dutta for defamation. Tanushree’s accusations were refuted by the assistant director of the movie, Sattyajit Gazmer.

Agnihotri released The Kashmir Files, a huge movie about the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, in March 2022.

The film won him another National Film Award. The Ministry of Home Affairs gave him nationwide Y-category security detail shortly after the movie’s premiere, based on information gathered from the Intelligence Bureau. The Vaccine War (2023), a medical drama film about the development of Covaxin during the COVID-19 epidemic in India, was Agnihotri’s next project. After receiving conflicting reviews from reviewers, the movie became a box office hit.

The Delhi Files, directed by Agnihotri, is the final installment in the Files trilogy, which is “evidently about the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.”

Cinema certification

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting chose Agnihotri to be a convenor for the 48th International Film Festival of India’s preview committee in 2017. Vivek Agnihotri
was chosen to join the Central Board of Film Certification in India that same year.

City Naxals

Agnihotri published Urban Naxals: The Making of Buddha in a Traffic Jam in 2018. In it, he labeled as “Urban Naxals” those in academics and the media who were supposedly working along with Naxalites to destroy the Indian government, making them “invisible enemies of India.”

The word, according to critics, is “vague rhetoric” meant to restrict dissent and discredit intellectuals who challenge the political right and establishment. The piece had received positive reviews in The New Indian Express and The Organiser. Smriti Irani, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, supported Agnihotri’s criticism of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jadavpur University for turning down Buddha in a Traffic Jam.

Disputes

Fact-checkers have discovered that Agnihotri used his Twitter account to distribute false information. Agnihotri tweeted a listicle in September 2018 asserting that the Indian National Congress ranked as the second most corrupt political party globally, according to a BBC survey. An online editor for the BBC claimed that the survey was fraudulent and that they had never carried out any such surveys. Agnihotri shared a false video on Twitter in November 2018 that purported to demonstrate Indian political leader Kanhaiya Kumar’s conversion to Islam.

The video, in the words of Boom Fact Check, was “a compilation of three separate clips which have taken Kanhaiya’s statements out of context from the entire speech.” Agnihotri made a false assertion in March 2019 that Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Indian prime minister, was to blame for the outcome of the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War. Prior to his death in May 1964, Nehru served as prime minister under Lal Bahadur Shastri. Agnihotri claimed to be tweeting a true photo of a protester against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in January 2020. Agnihotri made a bogus claim in February 2020 that COVID-19 can be killed by cannabis.

Twitter suspended his account in September 2018 until he removed a disparaging comment about Swara Bhaskar. Vivek tweeted, “Where is the placard – ‘#MeTooProstituteNun’?” in reaction to Swara criticizing politician P. C. George for referring to an accused rape victim as a prostitute. It was assumed that Swara was being called a prostitute by the tweet. Agnihotri justified his post, stating that he was drawing attention to the liberals’ selective demonstrations against supposed Hindu offenders.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, received a legal notice from Vivek Agnihotri and his team, which also included Pallavi Joshi and Abhishek Agarwal. The notice had demanded that she withdraw her remarks characterizing their video, “The Kashmir Files,” as deceptive propaganda meant to degrade a certain community. The notification had demanded an unqualified apology and accused defamation and malice. The group had claimed that Banerjee’s comments were unfounded and meant to damage their movie and brand.

August 2024: After Agnihotri participated in a demonstration for victim justice during protests against Mamta’s leadership, an old 2013 social media post including his foul rape joke became viral, causing uproar.

Tanushree Dutta accused him of harassing women sexually while they were filming Chocolate (2005).
