Indian pop, jazz, cinema, and playback vocalist Usha Uthup Iyer was active in the late 1960s, early 1970s, and early 1980s. In the first season of the show Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai, she also performed the title song. Usha Uthup received the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour given by the Indian government, in 2024.

Usha Uthup Individual Life

Usha’s birthdate is November 8, 1947, into an Iyer family of Tamil Brahmins in Mumbai. Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami Iyer was her father.

She attended Byculla’s St. Agnes High School. Usha Uthup was expelled from music class at school since her voice didn’t fit in with the other students’. However, her music teacher saw that she had some musical talent and would assign her to play triangles or clappers. She was raised in a musical environment despite never having received official training in music. She used to accompany her parents when they listened to a variety of music on the radio, including Kishori Amonkar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, as well as Western classical, Hindustani, and Carnatic music.

S.M.A. Pathan was her next-door neighbour and the deputy commissioner of police at the time. Usha was inspired to learn Hindi and take up Indian classical music by his daughter Jamila. In the 1970s, she pioneered her own kind of Indian pop thanks to her fusion technique.

She was previously married to the late Ramu and is now married to Jani Chacko Uthup, a member of the Kottayam Manarcaud Painumkal family. Their son Sunny is named after the song “Sunny,” and their daughter Anjali. On July 8, 2024, her husband Jani Chacko passed away from heart arrest.

Usha Uthup Career

Airtel Super Singer Junior Season 1 and Airtel Super Singer 5 on Star Vijay included Usha Uthup as a judge. At nine years old, she sang in public for the first time. She was first introduced to Ameen Sayani, the most well-known radio announcer in India at the time, by her sisters, who were already considering pursuing careers in music. She was given the chance to sing on Radio Ceylon’s Ovaltine Music Hour by Ameen Sayani. She sang the song “Mockingbird Hill” on vocals. Following that, she made a number of appearances during her adolescent years.

Singing career

Usha Uthup began her musical career in 1969 in Chennai, when she sang in a saree and leg callipers at a little nightclub called Nine Gems, which was located in the basement of the former Safire Theatre complex on Mount Road .[Reference required] The nightclub owner requested that she stay on for a week since her performance was so highly appreciated. She started singing at nightclubs like “Trincas” in Calcutta after her first performance there. In Trincas, she ran into Uthup, her future husband.

She also performed at “Talk of the Town,” which is currently known as “Not Just Jazz by the Bay,” in Bombay (now Mumbai), around the same time. Her next engagement took her to Delhi after Trincas.

By coincidence, she was invited to sing movie playback by a film crew from the Navketan unit and Dev Anand when they happened to visit the nightclub. Consequently, she began her Bollywood career with Ivory-Merchant’s Bombay Talkies (1970), when she sang Hare Rama Hare Krishna and an English song under Shanker-Jaikishan. She was originally scheduled to perform Dum Maro Dum for Hare Rama Hare Krishna alongside Asha Bhosle. She lost her opportunity, though, due to internal politics by other vocalists, and instead sang an English verse.[Reference required]

Singing career recorded English versions of two popular songs in 1968 for the EP Love Story, including “Jambalaya” and “Greenback Dollar” by The Kingston Trio, as well as “Scotch and Soda,” another Kingston hit.

Along with Ismail Darbar, she participated as a judge on the 2012 season of the singing reality show Bharat Ki Shaan: Singing Star, which broadcast on the DD National channel. In Season 3 of the show, she serves as the judge as well. She also made an appearance on a Marathi singing reality show as a key guest. She sang Marathi songs to amuse the crowd.

Singing career is a well-known stage performer who has performed all over the world and has a vibrant stage presence. Over the years, she has received numerous accolades, including the Channel [V] award for exceptional achievement, the Mahila Shiromani Purashkar for international peace, and the Rajiv Gandhi Purashkar for National Integration for excellent music. On May 26, she was a guest on the Kapil Sharma Show.

Acting career

Uthup is an actress as well. She played Kurisuveettil Mariamma in the Malayalam film Pothan Vava in 2006. In the film Bombay to Goa, she had a brief cameo. In Anjun Dutt’s 2007 film Bow Barracks Forever, she played the lead role. She made another appearance as herself in the Hattrick song video in 2007.

She made an appearance on Indian Idols 1 and 2 under disguise. She served as a co-judge for Idea Star Singer Seasons V (2010) and 2007 and 2008. In the Tamil film Manmadan Ambu (2010), she has a small part.

She also played a maid in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf. Additionally, she sang a song for the February 18, 2011 release of the movie. She acted in the Kannada movie Parie in 2012. She recorded a rendition of the iconic singer-songwriter Bob Dylan song “Blowin’ in the Wind” for the 2019 documentary If Not for You[citation needed].[Reference required]
