Diljit Dosanjh was born to a Sikh family on January 6, 1984 in the Punjabi village of Dosanjh Kalan in the Phillaur tehsil of the Jalandhar district. His mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, is a stay-at-home mom, while his father, Balbir Singh, is a former employee of Punjab Roadways. His two siblings are a younger brother and an older sister. He spent his early years in Dosanjh Kalan before moving to Ludhiana, Punjab, where he finished his official education.
He received his high school diploma from Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, which is close to D Block Model Town Arwa in Ludhiana and is currently connected with the CBSE. He started his singing career while still a student by singing Kirtan (religious music of the Sikhs) at nearby gurdwaras. In 2004, Diljit’s debut album Ishq Da Uda Ada was released by T-Series’ Finetone Cassettes. Dosanjh was advised to spell his first name as Diljit rather than Daljit by Rajinder Singh of Finetone, who assisted him in making his breakthrough in the Punjabi music industry. The words were written by Balvir Boparai, and Bablu Mahindra wrote the music. All eight of the album’s tracks included Dosanjh’s vocals, and the producers created a music video for the title track. His second album, Dil, was released in 2004 and featured Finetone Cassettes once more.
Alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Fatima Sana Shaikh, he had an appearance in the social satire Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari in 2020. The movie opened in theatres on November 13, 2020. Dosanjh sang the spiritual song “Paigambar” that same year.
