Raised in Bombay in 1986 by painter and video artist Nalini Malani, Kapadia attended the Andhra Pradesh boarding school Rishi Valley School. As a member of the school’s cinema club, she got her first exposure to avant-garde filmmakers like Ritwik Ghatak and Andrei Tarkovsky here. She attended Mumbai’s St. Xavier’s College to study. Sophia College in Mumbai awarded her a master’s degree after just one year.

Payal Kapadia continued on to the Film and Television Institute of India to pursue film direction, where she was accepted after making two attempts in 2012. Payal Kapadia spent the five years in between working in advertising and helping a video artist in Mumbai. She spearheaded the campaign in 2015 against Gajendra Chauhan’s nomination to the FTII chairmanship, and the authorities then filed a formal complaint against her. She was not awarded scholarships, and the institute administration limited the grants.
