Madhur Bhandarkar Career

Bhandarkar was employed in Khar, a Mumbai suburb, in a video cassette library. Because of this, he had access to a vast library of films and used them to study filmmaking.

Bhandarkar first gained experience as an assistant to small-time filmmakers before being hired by Ram Gopal Varma. Even in Varma’s love comedy Rangeela (1995), in which he served as associate director, he made his debut.

A few years later, after more than three years of production, he made his directing debut with Trishakti (1999). The cast of the movie was somewhat understated, and it did not do well at the box office.

Madhur Bhandarkar helmed the criminal drama Chandni Bar in 2001, which starred Tabu and Atul Kulkarni in the key parts. The brutal underworld life of Mumbai, complete with dance bars, prostitution, and gun crime, was portrayed in the movie. When it was released, it was met with a great deal of critical and financial acclaim, propelling Bhandarkar to the forefront of Bollywood filmmaking. He won the National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues for the movie.

Bhandarkar directed the 2005 drama Page 3, which starred Konkona Sen Sharma and focused on Mumbai’s Page 3 media and society. When it was released, the movie was well-received by critics and did well at the box office. Along with his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director, Bhandarkar also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay.

Madhur Bhandarkar directed the social drama Traffic Signal (2007), starring Kunal Khemu and Konkona Sen Sharma, after directing the corporate drama Corporate (2006), starring Bipasha Basu and Kay Kay Menon. The lives and struggles of those who lived close to a fictional Mumbai traffic light were shown in the movie. When it was released, it was met with great critical praise but only moderate box office success. Bhandarkar won the Best Director National Film Award for it.

Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, and Mugdha Godse starred in the key parts of Bhandarkar’s second film, the drama Fashion (2008), which became his biggest box office hit to date. When it was first released, the film, which examined feminism and female authority in the context of Indian fashion, was widely praised by critics. Many people consider Fashion to be among the best women-focused Bollywood flicks.

Madhur Bhandarkar then directed the 2009 prison drama Jail, which portrayed the life of wrongfully convicted prisoners in Indian jails and starred Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse. The movie opened to a below-average box office performance with conflicting reviews from critics.

Heroine (2012), his next film as director, was a drama film inspired by the glitzy Hindi film business (Bollywood). Kareena Kapoor played a once-successful film actress whose career is on the fall in the movie, replacing Aishwarya Rai in the lead role. After being released, the movie got mixed to positive reviews, with high marks going to Kapoor’s performance and Bhandarkar’s directing. It also became a box office hit.
