During the Regional Four Day Competition in February 2009, Sunil made his first-class cricket debut for Trinidad and Tobago, bowling thirteen overs without picking up a wicket. After going wicketless in the first innings, he captured two wickets in the second, including that of Lionel Baker, the last man standing, before playing in another first-class match almost a year later .

Narine played his maiden Twenty20 (T20) match on January 20, 2011, at the Caribbean Twenty20, however he did not bowl because the match was called off due to rain before Trinidad & Tobago could bowl. Trinidad and Tobago were victorious in the end, as Narine took five wickets at an average of 13.40. Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the competition by virtue of winning it.

The championship was won by Trinidad and Tobago, and Narine took the most wickets (15), five more than the next closest rival, fellow spin bowler Nikita Miller. With 39 wickets, Narine holds the record for most wickets taken in Champions League T20 history.

Sunil Narine was acquired for $700,000 by the Kolkata Knight Riders in February 2012 so that he may participate in the 2012 Indian Premier League.
