Padikkal was born on July 7, 2000, in Edappal, Kerala, to Babunu Kunnath and Ambili Padikkal.2011 saw his family relocate from Hyderabad to Bangalore, where he started Karnataka Institute of Cricket training. Devdutt Padikkal began representing Karnataka in the under-16 and under-19 age groups in 2014. In the Karnataka Premier League, Bellary Tuskers selected him in 2017. At Bangalore’s St. Joseph’s University of Business Management, he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration.

On November 28, 2018, he made his Karnataka first-class debut in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy. The Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired him at the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League in December 2018. In his first four matches, he scored three fifties, becoming him the first player in IPL history to do so.
On September 26, 2019, he made his List A debut for Karnataka in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for 2019–20. With 609 runs in eleven games, he was the tournament’s top scorer.
Devdutt Padikkal was included in the India A team for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019. On November 8, 2019, he made his Twenty20 debut for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for 2019–20.

Devdutt Padikkal was included in India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) and One Day International (ODI) teams for their series against Sri Lanka in June 2021. On July 28, 2021, he played his first T20I match for India against Sri Lanka.
While playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL), Padikkal was named the league’s Emerging Player of the Year. In his first IPL season, he amassed 473 runs in 15 games for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Devdutt Padikkal was included in the Karnataka team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2021. In the Indian Premier League of 2021, on April 22, Devdutt achieved his first hundred run with a score of 101*, helping Royal Challengers Bangalore defeat the Rajasthan Royals by ten wickets.
Devdutt Padikkal was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals in February 2022 at the Indian Premier League 2022 auction. Padikkal made his first-class century in March 2022 against Puducherry in the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy match. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, he hit his 1,000th IPL run in April of 2022. Ahead of the 2024 season’s auction, he was traded to the Lucknow Super Giants in November 2023.
