Wake Up Sid (2009), a coming-of-age movie, marked Mukerji’s directorial debut and premiered to positive reviews and box office results. His following two films, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) a fantasy film and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), a romantic comedy, are among the highest-grossing Hindi films. He was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Director for all three of his films, and he won the award for Best Debut Director for Wake Up Sid.

Ayan Mukerji Childhood And Upbringing

Mukerjee, the son of Bengali film actor Deb Mukherjee, was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, into a Bengali Hindu household. His grandpa Sashadhar Mukherjee entered the Indian film industry in 1930, and it is when his family first became involved in the business. Filmistan Studio was founded by Sashadhar Mukherjee in Mumbai. He was a trailblazer in the industry, having produced films such as Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Love in Simla (1960), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962), and Leader (1964). Ayan’s family currently owns and operates Filmistan Studio.

Satidevi Mukherjee (née Ganguly), Ayan’s grandmother, was the sister of vocalist Kishore Kumar, pioneer actors Ashok and Anup Kumar, and Sashadhar Mukherji’s wife. The brothers of Ayan’s grandpa were Ravindra Mohan Mukherjee, the grandfather of actress Rani Mukherjee, director Subodh Mukherjee, and film producer Prabodh Mukherjee. Actors Joy Mukherjee, Subir Mukherjee, and Shomu Mukherjee—the father of actresses Kajol and Tanisha Mukherjee and the husband of actress Tanuja—were the brothers of Ayan’s father.

Mukerji attended Mumbai’s Vile Parle’s Jamnabai Narsee School. Later, he enrolled at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, but left after his first year to work as a clapper boy for Ashutosh Gowariker in the film Swades (2004).

Ayan Mukerji Career

Initially, Mukerji worked as his brother-in-law Ashutosh Gowariker’s assistant director on the drama Swades (2004). Later, he assisted Karan Johar on the romantic drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), where he also made an appearance as an extra.

After a brief hiatus from the film industry, Mukerji created the script and directed the 2009 coming-of-age movie Wake Up Sid. It was Mukerji and Kapoor’s first joint venture, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma in the key roles. In the movie, an ambitious writer from Kolkata teaches a reckless wealthy college brat the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions.

Produced under Johar’s label Dharma Productions, it debuted to widespread praise from critics for its original concept, themes, screenplay, soundtrack, directing, story, and cast performances. At the box office, it became a commercial success, making ₹62 crore (US$7.4 million) globally. Wake Up Sid brought Mukerji his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director and the first Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director (he tied with Zoya Akhtar for Luck by Chance).

2012 saw Mukherji

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Mukerji’s second project, was a romantic comedy with Kapoor and Deepika Padukone as the key parts. It was his second movie released under Johar’s label. The movie centres on two individuals who cross paths on a hiking excursion and fall in love, albeit neither of them says it out loud. They quickly grow apart but eventually cross paths again at a friend’s wedding. With great appreciation for its directing, story, screenplay, soundtrack, cinematography, production design, costumes, and cast performances, the movie debuted to wide critical acclaim. At the box office, the movie was a huge hit, earning ₹319.6 crore (US$38 million) globally, making it the fourth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year.

Mukerji received his second nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director thanks to Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. It has become a very popular film among young people over time.

The next big-budget fantasy film written and directed by Mukerji, Shiva (2022), stars Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni in the key parts. Produced under Johar’s brand, this is the first film in a trilogy that will be a part of the Āstraverse film world. Mukerji originally had the idea for the movie in 2011, and it was mostly influenced by stories he had heard as a child and Indian history. In contrast to Mukerji’s two earlier films, it received mixed reviews from critics when it was first released. The actors, visual effects, soundtrack, action scenes, and musical score were all praised, but the dialogue was criticised.

Nevertheless, the movie became Mukerji’s second consecutive big hit at the box office, taking in ₹431 crore (US$52 million) globally. It came in at number one for the year’s top grossing Hindi movie, sixth for all Indian movies, highest for Hindi movies in foreign markets since the COVID-19 pandemic, and among the highest grossing Indian movies ever. Mukerji received his third nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva. Brahmāstra: Part Two – Dev and Brahmāstra: Part Three, its two sequels, are being created concurrently and are scheduled for release in December 2026 and December 2027, respectively.

Mukerji is currently filming War 2, the sixth episode of the YRF Spy Universe, which will be his first project not produced by Dharma Productions, as of October 2023. Alongside Telugu actor N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Kiara Advani, Hrithik Roshan plays the action thriller War’s Kabir Dhaliwal again in this movie. The movie is slated for release on August 14, 2025, which happens to be Indian Independence Day.
