Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer Arun Kumar (born September 21, 1986), better known by his stage name Atlee, is most recognised for his work in Tamil films. Initially, he assisted S. Shankar as a director on the films Enthiran (2010) and Nanban (2012).

With the Fox Star Studios-produced movie Raja Rani (2013), he made his directing debut. For this film, he won the Tamil Nadu State award for best dialogue writer as well as the Vijay Award for Best Debut Director.
Atlee directed the Vijay-starring flicks Theri (2016), Mersal (2017), and Bigil (2019), all of which were economically successful at the box office and garnered multiple awards. Atlee subsequently directed Jawan (2023), the Hindi-language film starring Shah Rukh Khan, which became his highest-grossing film. One of the most successful directors in Indian cinema is Atlee.
Atlee Career
At the age of 19, Atlee worked as S. Shankar’s assistant director on the 2010 film Enthiran and the 2012 film Nanban, which was an adaptation of the Hindi blockbuster 3 Idiots. His 2011 short film, Mugaputhagam, drew a fervent response from the general audience and other media outlets. With the romantic comedy Raja Rani, which was produced by A. R. Murugadoss, Fox Star Studios, and Next Big Films, Atlee went on to make his directing debut in 2013. Starring were Sathyaraj, Jai, Nayanthara, Arya, and Nazriya Nazim. It took home more than ₹50 crores at the box office and brought him the Vijay Award for Best Debut Director.
After Raja Rani’s success, Atlee directed his next movie, Theri (2016), an intense action thriller with Vijay, Samantha, and Amy Jackson in the key roles. It was produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. Critics gave it mixed reviews, praising the cast’s performances as well as the film’s production design, soundtrack, cinematography, and action scenes. With over ₹156 crores in box office receipts, it became the second highest grossing Tamil film of 2016 and a tremendous commercial success.
Mersal, an action thriller produced by Thenandal Studio Limited, was directed by Atlee in 2017. It was once again starring Vijay, with important supporting parts being played by Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, S. J. Surya, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Hareesh Peradi, and Kovai Sarala. It was a financial triumph, rising to rank among the highest-grossing Tamil films with a global box office total of over 250 crores. The movie started receiving several awards.
HGC Entertainment distributed the movie in China on December 6, 2018. Grand Rex, France, the biggest movie theatre in Europe, had a screening of the movie due to high demand. The movie was shown at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea and the Hainan International Film Festival in Hainan, China.

AGS Entertainment produced sports action drama Bigil (2019), which Atlee directed. With Vijay and Nayanthara, he got back together for the third and second times, respectively. In addition, Jackie Shroff, Vivek, and Kathir played significant parts. A. R. Rahman wrote the music. It was met with a mixed bag of reviews upon release, but at ₹310 crore, it became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2019. It went on to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil movies ever made as well as Vijay’s career’s highest-grossing movie.
He has tried his hand at film production. A for Apple Productions was established by Atlee and his spouse, Priya Atlee, in 2017. Together, they created Sangili Bungili Kadhava Thorae, a horror comedy written and directed by Ike, as their debut motion picture with Fox Star Studios. Jiiva, Sri Divya, and Soori played the key parts.
The supernatural horror thriller film Andhaghaaram, written and directed by V. Vignarajan, was produced by Atlee and Priya in 2020. Under the auspices of Passion Studio and K. Poornachandra’s O2 Pictures, Priya Atlee, Sudhan Sundaram, and Jayaram produced it. In addition to Pooja Ramachandran and Misha Ghoshal in supporting parts, the film featured Arjun Das, Vinoth Kishan, and Kumar Natarajan in the key roles. On November 24, 2020, it was made available for watching directly on Netflix.
With Jawan, Atlee made his screen debut in Hindi cinema alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, and Ridhi Dogra. In the movie, Deepika Padukone had a cameo appearance while Sanjay Dutt had a special appearance. Red Chillies Entertainment, headed by Khan’s wife Gauri Khan, and Gaurav Verma produced it. Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack. On September 7, 2023, it was released to generally positive reviews from reviewers and viewers. With its first day gross of ₹75 crores (US$9.4 million), it broke the record for a Hindi film. Its opening weekend global box office revenue was ₹520.79 crores.

On November 9, 2014, Atlee wed actress Krishna Priya. January 13, 2023, saw the birth of their son, Meer.
