On October 25, 1956, in the Small Heath neighborhood of Birmingham, England, Soni Razdan was born to Indian father Narendra Nath Razdan, a Kashmiri Pandit, and British mother Gertrude Hoelzer. In India, Soni Razdan was raised in Bombay.
Soni Razdan Career
Razdan’s theatrical career began in Hindi with Bund Darvaze, Satyadev Dubey’s translation of Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit, then in English with John Fowles’ The Collector. After seeing her pictures, Franco Zeffirelli decided to cast her as Mary in his Jesus of Nazareth miniseries. Soni Razdan starred in the Doordarshan TV series Buniyaad as Sulochana. She has been a regular on Indian television and has also acted in the serials Saahil and Gaatha. She began directing in 2002 with Aur Phir Ek Din on Star Plus, a spin-off of One Fine Day, which starred George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Soni Razdan has performed in Bollywood films as well. Love Affair, a film directed by Razdan, was supposed to come out in 2016, but it never did. She appeared in Raazi, directed by Meghna Gulzar, in which her daughter Alia played the pivotal role. This was the first time she had appeared on screen alongside Alia in the role of Alia’s mother.

On April 20, 1986, Razdan wed Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Because Bhatt did not want to divorce his first wife, he and Razdan had a very discreet nikaah ceremony and converted to Islam before being married. Soni selected the name Sakina as her Muslim name after converting to Islam.
Soni Razdan is the stepmother of Rahul and Pooja Bhatt, and the mother of actresses Shaheen Bhatt (born 28 November 1988) and Alia Bhatt (15 March 1993). According to Razdan, she has been a resident of India since she was three months old and holds Indian citizenship abroad.
