Shilpi attended Kamla Nehru College, University of Delhi, to study commerce after being born and raised in Delhi. She participated in university theater. She performed in numerous DU stage and street performances.

In 2008, Marwaha began performing professionally in Delhi with the Asmita Theatre Group. She trained under Arvind Gaur, the theater director, and took part in his college theater workshop. She directed workshop pieces and oversaw theater workshops.

Her main plays are A Woman Alone by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, Bertolt Brecht’s Ramkali (The Good Person of Szechwan), Mahesh Dattani’s Final Solutions and 30 Days in September, Girish Karnad’s Rakt Kalyan, Swadesh Deepak’s Court Martial, Ambedkar aur Gandhi by Rajesh Kumar, Mohan Rakesh’s Lehro ke Rajhans, Unsuni (based on Harsh Mandar’s book & scripted by Mallika Sarabhai), Vijay Mishra’s “Tat Niranjana,” Dario Fo’s adaptation Operation Three Star, based on Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Govind Purushottam Deshpande’s Raastey, and Dario Fo’s Can’t Pay won’t Pay (Hindi adaptation by Amitabh Srivastava). Additionally, Shilpi has collaborated with RJ Raunac on Asghar Wajahat’s dramatic readings of his stories.

In addition to acting, she is a writer of five stories, all of which have been performed in Delhi: “Apratyaksh,” a story about the love of a eunuch; “Kaash,” a story about an intercaste romance; “Purity,” a commentary on the societal tendency to shame lesbians; and “Rangmanch,” a narrative about the challenges faced by an aspiring actor attempting to realize his dream; “Asifa” on child abuse. In her solo act “Ehsaas,” Shilpi portrays the difficulty of a young girl trying to communicate her love and desire for other ladies.

Shilpi collaborated with Oscar-winning director Ross Kaufman on the national award-winning documentary film Daughters of Mother India . 2010 saw her win the “International Short and Sweet Festival” Best Actress prize.She has judged several stage and street play events at various colleges and institutions across the country. She has also taken part in theatre workshops at numerous colleges in Delhi and beyond, such as Delhi University, IIT, and IIM.

Thousands of street plays based on social issues such as female foeticide, child education, mental health, gender equality, domestic violence, child labor, poverty, drugs, interfaith harmony, road rage, environment, anti-ragging, Shilpi Marwaha performed in Delhi NCR and other states. Marwaha is involved in the anti-corruption and women’s safety movements, as well as the Social Awareness movement, and she speaks out for domestic workers.

When Shilpi quit the theater group where she had nearly ten years of experience in 2016 due to sexual harassment at work from the director, other senior actors followed suit.

In honor of her late mother, whose name “Sukhvarsha” served as the inspiration for the group’s moniker, Shilpi founded Sukhmanch Theatre in March 2017. She served as the group’s director and creative leader as of 2019.
