Born in June 24, 1979, Vera Mindy Chokalingam (sometimes professionally referred to as Mindy Kaling; /ˈkeɪlɪŋ/) is an American actress, comedian, screenwriter, and producer. Well-known for her vast television career, she has been nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards and has won two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Tony Award, and other notable honours.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Kaling was the child of architect father Avudaiappan Chokalingam and obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) mother Swati Chokalingam, née Roy-Sircar. Vijay is her older brother. Her parents met while employed at the same hospital in Nigeria. They are both from India . Her father was supervising the construction of a hospital wing. After reading a spec script written by Kaling, producer Greg Daniels of The Office recruited her as a writer-performer in 2004 as he worked to adapt the BBC TV series of the same name. “She’s very original,” he added. The adult-oriented Scooby-Doo spin-off series Velma, for which Kaling serves as executive producer and voices the lead character, was ordered by HBO Max in February 2021. Velma dropped to the bottom of the list of television series on IMDb, while viewers gave it similar poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Google.

The third episode of the Legally Blonde series will be co-written by Kaling and Dan Goor. The movie was supposed to come out in May 2022 , but screenplay has caused an indefinite delay.
