Koechlin, who was up in Pondicherry, India, was always fascinated to theatre. She worked with a neighbourhood theatre company while pursuing her studies in drama at Goldsmiths, University of London. Following her return to India, she starred in the black comedy-drama Dev.D (2009) as Chanda in her first Hindi film, for which she was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Kalki Koechlin then starred in two of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year they were released: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), both romantic comedy-dramas that earned her nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. With the 2011 murder thriller That Girl in Yellow Boots, in which she co-starred, Koechlin branched out into screenwriting.

In addition to earning critical acclaim for her roles in independent films like the comedy-drama Waiting (2015) and the slice-of-life picture Ribbon (2017), Koechlin maintained her commercial success with the supernatural thriller Ek Thi Daayan (2013) and the musical drama Gully Boy (2019). The couple attended marital counselling in the interim before they were officially divorced.
