Beginning of career (2004–2011)
Shalmali started performing at the age of sixteen. Her mother, Indian classical singer and theatre icon Uma Kholgade, had been teaching her music since she was eight years old. She subsequently pursued her music studies with Shubhada Paradkar and was accepted to the Los Angeles College of Music for the April semester; however, she chose not to enrol because of her recording obligations. Last year, Shalmali gave a well-attended two-hour homage to Amy Winehouse, one of her favourite singers, at Blue Frog in Mumbai.

First-region hit “Raja Raja” by Kholgade, from the 2013 Tamil movie Naan Rajavaga Pogiren, was well-received.
