Nagesh Kukunoor Career In Film

Nagesh Kukunoor used the money he earned in the United States from his engineering work to produce Hyderabad Blues, a film released in 1998. It is based on a script he wrote in Atlanta about Indians leaving the United States of America and going back to their homes. He both acted in the film and directed it. It was filmed in 17 days on a budget of Rs. 1.7 million, or around US$40,000. Independent filmmaker Sanjay Arora thought it was realistic and among the first to use Hyderabadi Urdu appropriately. It turned as India’s most financially successful indie film. The movie was screened at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Peachtree International Film Festival in Atlanta.

The Kolkata Film Festival had the debut of one of the later movies, 3 Deewarein (2003). Unlike his other works, this one had a ₹21 million (US$260,000) budget and included well-known performers like Jackie Shroff, Juhi Chawla, and Naseeruddin Shah.

Dor, a drama film starring Ayesha Takia, Gul Panag, and Shreyas Talpade, was written and directed by Nagesh Kukunoor in 2006. In the movie, Nagesh played the role of businessman Chopra. In the movie, two women from disparate backgrounds are brought together by fate. Tradition traps Meera (Ayesha Takia), a young woman who soon after gets married becomes a widow.

But it was his movie Iqbal, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Shreyas Talpade, that brought him widespread praise and attention from critics for Nagesh’s heartbreakingly simple screenplay and the performances from each actor.

Despite doing poorly at the box office, Nagesh’s action-thriller 8 x 10 Tasveer, which starred Akshay Kumar in the starring role, was regarded as his most introspective picture to date. “I prefer to cast people that are dear to my heart. And this one tries to approach me as closely as it can. I worked as an environmental consultant for a while. As an environmental protection officer, Akshay does a good job,” Kukunoor stated in an interview from April 2009. His film Dhanak took home the 65th Berlin International Film Festival award in 2015.
