Based on the same-titled novel by David Nicholls, Mod played Emma Morley in Netflix’s 2024 film One Day, starring opposite Leo Woodall. It narrates the tale of two young people who had a platonic one-night stand and have met yearly for twenty years. Because of the emotional nature of her character in This Is Going to Hurt, Mod first turned down the role because she didn’t think she could play a romantic lead.

“I think part of the reason why I just didn’t see myself playing that part was because insidiously and implicitly, that’s a message that I’ve been fed my entire life—that people who look like me aren’t romantic leads, that people who look like me aren’t the people who get to play romantic leads,” she said, looking back on her initial decision.

With 9.9 million views during the week of February 12, it was the most watched series worldwide. Mod was praised by Chitra Ramaswamy, who wrote for The Guardian, calling her a “revelation” and noting that it was difficult to believe this was her first main performance. Speaking about how her character’s ethnicity changed in the book and movie, she said she was “aware how significant it will be to a lot of people, especially young women of colour, young South Asian women in particular” and hoped it would “open people’s minds a little bit.”

The next major part for Mod will be in the Disney+ thriller series Playdate.
