On August 28, 1996, Salt was born in Bodelwyddan, Wales. He was a member of the North East Wales Under-11 cricket team when he started playing in St Asaph. Phil Salt went to school in Chester, then his family relocated to Barbados when he turned eleven years old. He could therefore play for England or the West Indies because he satisfied the Barbados residence criterion.

In a June 2015 encounter between Sussex and Surrey, where the Sussex lineup included Mahela Jayawardene and Ashar Zaidi, he scored forty-three runs. In a 2015 Royal London One-Day Cup encounter against Essex, Salt made his List A debut. He was the 29th different player to represent Sussex in the competition. Salt opened the batting and scored 22 off of 20 balls, however the rain eventually ended the match without a conclusion.

Salt and England won the 2022 T20 World Cup on November 13, 2022. Phil Salt participated in both the competition’s semifinal and final games during his two visits to the tournament.

Salt was included in the England 2023–24 West Indies trip squads for both the ODI and T20 formats. He scored his first T20 international century in the third Twenty20 International of the series, making history as the fifth batter for England’s men. Phil Salt scored a century again in the fourth Twenty20 International, accomplishing several noteworthy goals in the process. His T20 international score of 119 was the highest ever achieved by an England men’s player.
