Ashley, a resident of Camberley, Surrey, was born Simone Ashwini Pillai to Indian Tamil parents Latha and Gunasekharan Pillai. Sean Pillai is Ashley’s older brother. Ashley has talked about how, despite coming from an intellectual family, she was always more drawn to the creative industries.Her parents expressed reluctance over her proclivity towards the arts.

Ashley’s family eventually relocated to Beaconsfield, where she finished her sixth form at Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead after graduating from Beaconsfield High School. Phasing myself out of school at sixteen, she said she was “wishing my life away” and “very stubborn”.
She spent a portion of her teenage years at her relatives’ home in Ojai, California. When she was eighteen, she signed with a modelling agency and started going to auditions. After that, she attended West London’s Arts Educational School (ArtsEd) to study acting.

Ashley debuted as an actress in two episodes of the fantasy teen drama Wolfblood on CBBC, playing the character Zuhra. Appearances in the ITV crime drama Broadchurch (2017) and the thriller series Guilt (2016) followed. In 2018, she debuted in a feature film, first starring as Aarti in Boogie Man then as one of the many Ben Lyk personalities in Kill Ben Lyk.

Ashley portrayed Olivia Hanan, a recurring role, in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, she made an appearance as Elise Fox in the psychological thriller miniseries The Sister on ITV.
