Rediff.com said in 2005 that Khan had made a name for himself as one of the top actors in Hindi cinema, having starred in two films: Salaam Namaste, a comedy-drama, and the love drama Parineeta. Parineeta, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, was an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 Bengali novella of the same name. It told the story of the love between an idealist (Lalita, Vidya Balan) and a musician (Shekhar, Khan), who was the son of a capitalist businessman.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film’s producer, thought Khan was too inexperienced for the character, but Sarkar convinced him that Khan was ideal for it.
