His breakthrough came with the sleeper smash Golmaal (2006), the first film in the comedy film franchise starring Ajay Devgn and Arshad Warsi. Subsequently, the franchise saw the release of Golmaal Returns (2008) and Golmaal 3 (2010), which went on to become one of the highest-grossing pictures of the year.

Eight years after releasing his first action thriller, Zameen, Shetty made a comeback to the action genre with Singham (2011). Initial Work, 1991–2002

When Shetty was seventeen years old, he worked as an assistant director on Ajay Devgn’s debut picture, Phool Aur Kaante. After that, he collaborated with Devgn on Suhaag (as a body double for Akshay Kumar, the film’s second main hero), Haqeeqat, and Zulmi. He subsequently joined Raju Chacha, Hindustan Ki Kasam, and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, all starring Devgn.

2003–2009: A breakthrough year for directors

When Shetty helmed the first installment of Devgn’s popular comedy series Golmaal, which became his first smash, in 2006, he became well-known. Shetty had made his feature film debut as an independent director in 2003 with the averagely grossing Zameen. His following two films, Golmaal Returns, a popular Golmaal sequel that starred Devgn, and Sunday, a comedic thriller, were both released in theatres in 2008, and All the Best: Fun Begins followed in 2009.

2010–present: Achievements in commerce

Golmaal 3, which debuted in theatres in 2010 and starred Devgn once more, was the third installment in the Golmaal series. It was unexpectedly Shetty’s first domestic blockbuster to enter the 100 Crore Club. Maintaining his partnership with Devgn, Shetty launched his Cop Universe in 2011 with the action movie Singham, in which Devgn played a police inspector battling corruption, and helmed the comedy Bol Bachchan, starring Abhishek Bachchan, in 2012; both films achieved massive success and broke through the 100 Crore Club domestically.

On August 9, 2013, Shetty’s Chennai Express, starring Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan, was released. Chennai Express achieved the biggest domestic box office revenue of any Bollywood film. With nearly US$17.4 million in revenue, the movie ranked third among Bollywood films that have made the most money abroad. In addition, the movie broke other box office records, including the fastest picture to hit ₹100 crore and ₹2 billion in the domestic market, as well as the highest opening-day gross, highest paid preview, best single-day gross, greatest opening weekend, and highest opening week.

Shetty has portrayed a judge on the Comedy Circus television programme.

Ajay Devgn stars in Shetty’s 2014 film Singham Returns, which is a follow-up to his 2011 picture Singham. In 2014, he also appeared in the fifth season of the television stunt game programme Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, replacing Akshay Kumar as presenter. Rohit Shetty became a producer in 2014 with Singham Returns, co-producing the movie under his Rohit Shetty Productions label. Dilwale, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, was moderately successful at the box office and was directed by him. In Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi seasons 6 and 8–11, he returned to the host chair.

The fourth movie in the Golmaal series, Golmaal Again, was next directed by Shetty. When it was released in October 2017, the film, which starred Ajay Devgn and Parineeti Chopra in the key roles, had mixed reviews. In addition to becoming the first Hindi blockbuster of 2017 and the highest grossing Diwali release ever, it also became the highest grossing Hindi film of 2017. Sooryavanshi, a 2021 Diwali movie starring Jackie Shroff, Katrina Kaif, and Akshay Kumar, is another film in the Cop Universe that Shetty directed. The film became the top grossing Hindi film of the year and was the first significant release from the Hindi cinema industry following the shutdown caused by COVID-19. With Indian Police Force, which stars Sidharth Malhotra and is available on Amazon Prime Video, Shetty makes his OTT debut.
