The crime drama Parinda (1989), the action drama Mission Kashmir (2000), the biographical drama 12th Fail (2023), and the patriotic romance drama 1942: A Love Story (1994) are among his well-known films as a director. Under his production company Vinod Chopra Films, he is also well-known for creating the Munna Bhai film trilogy, 3 Idiots (2009), PK (2014), and Sanju (2018).

Vidhu Vinod Chopra Childhood

Chopra was raised in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India, where he was born. Veteran director Ramanand Sagar was his half-brother, and his father was D. N. Chopra. His parents were originally from British India, namely Peshawar. His mother, Shanti Devi Mahalakshmi, departed Kashmir in 1990 as a result of the unrest there. Based on the same story, he dedicated his film Shikara to his mother. Vidhu Vinod Chopra attended Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India to study film director.

Chopra earned the Guru Dutt Memorial Award for Best Student Film and the National Film Award for Best Short Experimental Film for his debut student short film, Murder at Monkey Hill (1976).

An Encounter with Faces (1976), a short documentary that focused on the suffering of India’s impoverished children, came next. This film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1979 for Best Documentary Short Film. In 1980, it was also awarded the Grand Prix at the Tampere Film Festival. Murder at Monkey Hill, his previous short film, was adapted into Sazaye Maut, his first full-length feature film. Naseeruddin Shah, Radha Saluja, and Dilip Dhawan starred in it. Film music was composed by Vanraj Bhatia.

The criminal drama Parinda (1989), which he directed as his second project, turned out to be a significant work of Hindi cinema. It received a lot of praise from critics and won a lot of accolades, expanding the scope of the crime drama and the language of images used in Hindi movies. A number of contemporary Indian directors have acknowledged their appreciation for and inspiration from Chopra’s work.

1942: A Love Story (1994), Chopra’s follow-up picture, was a romantic drama with a patriotic theme that took place during the British Raj’s decline. This film, starring Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala, was also the final one with music created by the renowned R. D. Burman.

One of the most commercially successful movies in India, 3 Idiots was the first to earn over Rs. 200 crore at the box office. Additionally, it gained popularity in areas such as Taiwan and Korea. PK and Sanju, two of his other films, were among the highest grossing movies in India. In 2015, he also made his directing debut in Hollywood with Broken Horses. Nevertheless, it has a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made just Rs. 60 lakh during its first weekend of release, making it a commercial failure.

His most recent film, Shikara, is a historical romance in Hindi that was released on February 7, 2020, marking his 13-year hiatus from directing in India. Eklavya: The Royal Guard, his final feature film, was released in 2007.
