Singer Shilpa Rao Biography, Wiki

Shilpa Rao (born Apeksha Rao; 11 April 1984) is an Indian singer born and raised in Jamshedpur. Shilpa Rao worked as a jingle vocalist for three years after earning her post-graduation in applied statistics from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai.

When she was a college student, composer Mithoon offered her the chance to record the song “Tose Naina” from Anwar (2007), which launched her Bollywood career and went on to become one of the year’s biggest hits.

Following the release of “Woh Ajnabi” from The Train (2007) and “Khuda Jaane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Rao gained considerable popularity. The latter song led to her being nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Shilpa Rao sang the song “Mudi Mudi Ittefaq Se” for Paa (2009), a film she co-wrote with Ilaiyaraaja the next year, and it brought her a second nomination for a Filmfare in the same category.

The song “Ishq Shava” from Yash Chopra’s swan song Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which Rao collaborated on with A. R. Rahman in 2012, was followed by Pritam’s “Malang” from Dhoom 3 (2013) and Vishal–Shekhar’s “Meherbaan” from Bang Bang! (2014). Rao’s musical partnerships with Amit Trivedi were also highly regarded, with tracks like “Manmarziyaan” from Lootera (2013) garnering special recognition.

Shilpa Rao Childhood

Rao, who was born in Jamshedpur on April 11, 1984, was originally given the name Apeksha Rao but eventually changed it to Shilpa Rao. Shilpa Rao claims that because Shilpa has “to do with art,” she can relate to the name more. Her father, S Venkat Rao, a music graduate, taught and trained her in singing when she was a young child. He helped Rao learn the “nuances” of various ragas: “His teaching style was informal but very effective because it was meant to spark my interest.”

Rao attended Little Flower School and Loyola School in Jamshedpur, where she sang in the school choir In order to complete a postgraduate diploma in statistics from the University of Mumbai, she travelled to Mumbai in 1997 with her family.

Shilpa Rao Career

Rao met Mithoon while attending college, and he called her to perform the song “Tose Naina” from Anwar (2007). Rao remarked, “This song is extremely close to my heart and has taught me what thrill and gratitude of music is and can be,” citing it as her “most innocent rendition” to date .

Even though Rao lists “Tose Naina” as her career debut song, her alap can be heard on the semi-instrumental track “Stranger On The Prowl” from the 2005 film Ek Ajnabee’s soundtrack. Throughout the year, she worked with Mithoon on two more projects: Aggar and The Train.

She calls herself a “movie buff” and says she enjoys seeing films from all around the world. Shilpa Rao doesn’t think language is a problem. “If the plot clicks my fancy, I can watch anything”. Her closest pals in the industry are Shruti Pathak and Meiyang Chang.

Rao prioritises hygiene and stays away from dirty areas because she has a dust allergy. Rao minimises her intake of sweets and “strong smelling fruits” while still eating a nutritious diet because she is “very sensitive” to smells. Rao emphasises the value of staying in shape by “eating right,” “sleeping well,” and using the stairs rather than the lift.
