Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Priyadarshan was involved in Malayalam cinema, having started his career in the early 1980s. He made the switch to Bollywood (Hindi-language film) in the 2000s and was quite active there for the duration of the decade. He has received the National Award three times in his career. Priyadarshan declared in 2013 that Rangrezz would be his final Hindi movie going forward in order to concentrate on Malayalam cinema. Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu (1986), Thalavattam (1986), Venkatalapudi Nadu (1988), Chithram (1988), Vandanam (1989), Kilukkam (1991), Mithunam (1993), Thenmavin Kombath (1994), Kaalapaani (1996), Chandralekha (1997), and Megham (1999) are some of his most well-known motion pictures.
Priyadarshan has been working on a number of projects lately, such as Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham 3, a historical epic that made waves for its audacious scope and high production standards.
Priyadarshan is renowned for translating Malayalam movies into Hindi, both from his own films and from others. Hera Pheri, Hungama, Hulchul, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag, Chup Chup Ke, De Dana Dan, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa are some of the most well-known Bollywood movies of this type.
Priyadarshan Childhood
Priyadarshan attended the Government Model School in Thiruvananthapuram for his early schooling, and the University College in Thiruvananthapuram awarded him a Master of Arts in Philosophy.[Reference required] Priyadarshan’s father was a college librarian, which encouraged him to pursue a love of reading. In his adolescence, he read a lot, and while in college, he began penning skits and short plays for All India Radio. The films made by P. Venu had an impact on him. Mohanlal, M. G. Sreekumar, Suresh Kumar, Sanal Kumar, Jagadish, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Ashok Kumar were few of his pals back then. At that time, Mohanlal started acting in movies. His pals trailed him to Chennai in hopes of getting a role in a movie. With Mohanlal’s assistance, Priyadarshan was able to secure several opportunities to work as an assistant scriptwriter on a few movies. He then began creating scripts, some of which went on to become successful. He had to return to Kerala eventually.
Priyadarshan’s initial goal was to play cricket; however, he gave up the game and pursued a career in filmmaking after suffering injury to his left eye during a match.
Career In Film
Priyadarshan has been a director and screenwriter in Indian cinema for forty years. In four Indian languages—Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu—he has directed more than ninety-five films.
1984–1987
Shankar, the marketable hero, assisted Priyadarshan and his close friends Suresh Kumar and Sanal Kumar in obtaining funding from Thiruvenkadam, a renowned cinema financier, when they planned to produce a movie in 1984. Alongside Shankar, Mohanlal—who was already well-known—was chosen to be the alternative hero. As a result, Priyadarshan made his directing debut in 1984 with the unexpected smash Poochakkoru Mookkuthi. A low-budget slapstick comedy picture, it ran well in Kerala theaters for 100 days.[Reference required] Following the success of Odaruthammava Aalariyam, Priyan continued his good form for slapstick comedy with Onnanam Kunnil Oradi Kunnil and the Mammootty-Shankar family thriller Parayanumvayya Parayathirikkanumvayya. Subsequently, he directed his debut film without Mohanlal, Punnaram Cholli Cholli.

winning streak carried over to Aram + Aram = Kinnaram and Boeing, both of which were experiencing fantastic business success. Later, he faced criticism for directing Rakkuyilin Ragasadassil, which was originally slated to star Shankar and Menaka. Many claimed that the lead actors, Mammootty and Suhasini, were miscast, and despite the film’s successful songs, it was a box office failure. However, his consistency was highlighted by the hits he made with Ayalvasi Oru Daridravasi, Dheem Tharikida Thom, and Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu. With the hugely popular sad family drama Thalavattam, Priyan gained recognition as a serious director. His Malayalam career continued with the success of Cheppu, while his Tamil film Chinnamanikkuyile remained unreleased.[Reference required]
1988–1998
For Priyadarshan, 1988 was a pivotal year in his career. Based on a screenplay by Sreenivasan, he directed Vellanakalude Nadu, which starred Mohanlal in the title role. The land mafia, corruption, and other social ills were the main topics of this movie. In the end, Priyadarshan’s career’s biggest hit to that moment was this movie. Next was Aryan, an action movie that lasted for 150 days in theaters and was based on T. Damodaran’s script about the Mumbai underworld. 1988 also saw the release of Priyadarshan’s all-time greatest hit, Chithram.
Before his own film Kilukkam smashed records in 1991, Chithram spent 366 days in theaters and made new records for collections. 1988 saw the completion of Oru Muthassi Katha and Mukunthetta Sumitra Vilikkunnu’s five publications. But in 1990, he was unable to produce success with Akkare Akkare Akkare and Kadathanadan Ambadi. Priyadarshan released Kilukkam in 1991, starring Mohanlal, Jagathi Sreekumar, and Revathi. Despite shattering multiple box office records, Kilukkam is regarded as one of the best Priyadarshan-Mohanlal productions. Thenmavin Kombathu (1994), Advaitham (1992), and Abhimanyu (1991) were his following three films, and all three of them successfully completed 100 days in theaters.
Both Minnaram (1994) and Midhunam (1993) received positive reviews at theaters. In the meantime, Shri. M. Karunanidhi approached Priyadarshan to direct a movie for his son’s production company. Thus, Priyadarshan debuted in Tamil with Gopura Vasalile. When Nagarjuna asked him to adapt his Malayalam movie Vandanam into Telugu, he also produced the Telugu film Nirnayam in 1991. Priyadarshan made his Bollywood debut in 1992 with Muskurahat, a film that was a dismal disappointment and was a replica of his own Malayalam feature Kilukkam.[Reference required]
He returned to Hindi cinema in 1993 with Gardish, an A. K. Lohithadas adaptation of the Malayalam film Kireedom. Priyadarshan was able to enter Bollywood thanks to the film’s success and its successful addition of elements needed by Hindi moviegoers. Priyadarshan directed Gandeevam, starring Balakrishna, in 1994. It is his second and only Telugu film to this day. He became well-known throughout the nation after he was given the task of directing the Miss World 1996 pageant, which took place in Bangalore. Priyadarshan’s dream project, Kalapani, an epic period picture centered on the Indian battle for independence and written by T. Damodaran, emerged in 1996. With notable music by Ilaiyaraja and leading performances by Mohanlal, Tabu, Prabhu, and Amrish Puri, Kalapani elevated Priyadarshan’s career to unprecedented heights. Originally shot in Malayalam, this movie was concurrently dubbed and released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Kalapani, for the first time in his career, won him multiple honors.
Priyadarshan directed two highly successful films in 1997: the Malayalam film Chandralekha and the Hindi film Virasat, which was a remake of Bharathan’s Tamil classic Thevar Magan. Because to Virasat’s popularity, Priyadarshan became well-known in the Hindi film industry.[Reference required] Priyadarshan directed three movies in 1998: Kabhi na Kabhi, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, which was based on the plot of Fazil’s Aniyathi Pravu, and Saat Rang Ke Sapne, which was a remake of his own Thenmavin Kombathu. However, all three movies were a box office bust. Following a protracted hiatus, Priyadarshan rejoined Mammooty in 1999 for Megham. Actors from the Telugu film industry Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna made Priyadarshan a few offers to direct them around this time, but he turned them down and went on to his next Hindi movie.[Reference required]
From 2000 to 2016
When Hera Pheri was launched in Hindi in 2000, Priyadarshan’s career in Bollywood was, for once, altered. The 1989 Malayalam film Ramjirao Speaking was adapted into a successful movie called Hera Pheri, which did quite well at the box office. This film, which starred Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Sunil Shetty, and Akshay Kumar, is now regarded as a turning point in the history of Hindi cinema. The Priyadarshan-Akshay Kumar combination was also born out of this movie and went on to generate other hits in the years after. Paresh Rawal followed Hera Pheri as a regular appearance in Priyadarshan movies. A number of Hindi films, including Kyon Ki, Hungama, Hulchul, Garam Masala, Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar, and Hungama, came after this one. Raakilipattu, also known as Senegithiye in Tamil, was a 2000 Malayalam-Tamil bilingual film starring Tabu and Jyothika. Priyadarshan’s plot was taken from the critically acclaimed Marathi film Bindhaast, an experimental film featuring only female characters. The Malayalam version was supposed to be released simultaneously with the Tamil version, however for reasons that are still unclear, the Malayalam edition was delayed. Friendship, the Malayalam version, and its Hindi dubbing came out just seven years later in 2007.
Filming on the life of Indian liberation warrior Chandrasekhar Azad, Priyadarshan’s English language epic historical picture The Last Revolutionary, produced by 20th Century Fox, was scheduled to start in 2001 but was postponed for unspecified reasons. Actor Kamal Haasan of Tamilya was working on his ambitious movie Anbe Sivam during this time. Kamal Haasan approached Priyadarshan to helm the movie after completing the script. Preproduction got underway, but Priyadarshan decided to pull out of the film ahead of time due to disagreements between the director and the actor. The crew’s schedules ran out as a result of this unexpected setback. As a result, the producers swiftly hired Sundar C. to helm the picture after persuading Kamal Haasan. In 2001, Priyadarshan directed the comedy film Kakkakuyil, which reunited Mohanlal and Mukesh, a popular duo in the 1980s and 1990s. At the box office, the movie was a big success. Subsequently, he focused more on Bollywood when his two other Malayalam films, Kilichundan Mampazham and Vettam, which were released in 2003 and 2004, respectively, had mediocre box office results.

Nonetheless, Priyadarshan carried on his prosperous streak in Hindi at the same time with Chup Chup Ke, Bhagam Bhag, Malamaal Weekly, Dhol, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, De Dana Dan, and Mere Baap Pehle Aap. However, the films that followed, including Tezz, Aakrosh, Khatta Meeta, Billu, and Bumm Bumm Bole, fell short of the hype. Rangrezz was a box office failure in 2013. Meanwhile, Priyadarshan’s unconventional film Kanchivaram, which focused on the weavers of Kanchipuram, surprised everyone. The main character, Prakash Raj, was the 2008 National Film Award winner for Best Actor. Kanchivaram also took home awards from a number of film festivals.
Returning to Malayalam cinema, Priyadarshan directed Arabeem Ottakom P. Madhavan Nayarum, starring Mohanlal in Oru Marubhoomikkadha. The box office performance of the 2014 movie Aamayum Muyalum and the 2013 film Geethaanjali, which starred Mohanlal as Dr. Sunny Joseph, were both lackluster.
Late in 2015, Priyadarshan revealed plans to direct a Malayalam crime thriller starring Mohanlal. In December 2015, the title Oppam was revealed and the production confirmed. The director got to work on the movie before Mohanlal’s other big-budget project, which was intended to be filmed in Russia but was postponed because of bad weather. Priyadarshan wrote the screenplay and dialogue alone; Govind Vijayan, a rookie writer, provided the storyline. After receiving favorable reviews upon its release, the movie went on to become a smash hit, shattering multiple records and rising to become the highest grossing Malayalam movie of the year in just 16 days.
2018 to the present
He began preproduction on Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, an epic historical period film in Malayalam that takes place in the sixteenth century, at the beginning of 2018. The movie, which stars Mohanlal in the lead role, is based on the combat adventures of naval leader Kunjali Marakkar IV, a Zamorin from Calicut. For nearly a century, Kunjali Marakkars organized the first naval defense of the Indian coast, defending Calicut from Portuguese invasion. Ultimately, the movie was released on December 2, 2021. It did not do well at the box office and garnered mixed reviews. Prior to the release of Marakkar, Hungama 2, a spiritual successor to his own 2003 Hindi film Hungama, was released immediately on Disney+ Hotstar on July 23, 2021, to unfavorable reviews. The movie was mostly based on Priyadarshan’s Malayalam blockbuster Minnaram from 1994.
Priyadarshan was the producer and director of the 2023 Malayalam film Corona Papers, which starred Shane Nigam. The movie was an official reproduction of the 1949 Japanese film Stray Dog, which in turn took inspiration from the Tamil classic 8 Thottakkal. Positive reviews greeted the film’s April 6, 2023, release, and it did fine at the box office. The same year, he directed the Tamil movie Appatha, which starred Urvashi in the lead role and debuted on JioCinema on July 29, 2023.
