Kanika Dhillon Life And Work
Kanika Dhillon was born in Amritsar, and she attended the London School of Economics to pursue a master’s degree after completing her undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi. She moved to Mumbai shortly after graduating to serve as a script supervisor for Red Chillies Entertainment, Shah Rukh Khan’s production firm. Kanika Dhillon then worked as an assistant director on Om Shanti Om, the company’s 2007 feature film.
Following his role as a script supervisor for the comedy-drama Billu (2009), Dhillon went on to write for two television shows: the children’s show Ishaan: Sapno Ko Awaaz De (2010–2011) on Disney India and the sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai (2009) on NDTV Imagine.
Dhillon’s debut book, Bombay Duck is a Fish, a satire about a girl named Neki Brar who dreams of being a Hindi cinema star, was published in 2011. Shah Rukh Khan launched the book. Rupa Gulab described the book as “a racy and witty lowdown on peer politics, star egos, sleaze, love rats, spot boys, junior artistes, ‘gora’ extras, etc.” in her review for Daily News and Analysis.
According to News18’s Rashi Tiwari, the novel “is written with a light touch but nevertheless strikes a chord with not just Bollywood aspirants but also those looking for a fantastical getaway.” She wrote the screenplay for Anubhav Sinha’s superhero movie Ra.One, which starred Khan, also in the same year.

2012 saw Hindustan Times recognize Dhillon for her outstanding achievements at their yearly “Top 30 Under 30” youth summit. Dhillon was eager to write a teen-focused superhero book after Ra.One. Her next book, Shiva & The Rise of the Shadows, was published in 2013.
It was inspired by the 2012 apocalypse theories. She wrote the script for the bilingual Telugu-Tamil comedy Size Zero (2015), starring Anushka Shetty as a corpulent woman who checks herself into a weight-loss clinic. Originally slated for a Hindi film, Dhillon’s husband, director Prakash Kovelamudi, loved the script and decided to direct it himself, leading to its eventual production in South India.
The Dance of Durga, Dhillon’s third book, was published in 2016. It relates the tale of Rajjo, a young, innocent lady who becomes a Godwoman. Khushboo Shukla called the book “gripping” and praised Dhillon for his ability to effectively explore the faith and culture of rural India in a review for Hindustan Times. Femina’s Deepa Suryanarayan appreciated Rajjo’s nuanced personality and noted that she could relate to him in spite of his transgressions.
Dhillon wrote the screenplays for two 2018 Hindi films: Kedarnath, directed by Abhishek Kapoor and starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan, and Manmarziyaan, a drama directed by Anurag Kashyap and starring Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, and Vicky Kaushal.
In addition, she wrote the screenplay for Judgemental Hai Kya, her husband’s parody on mental illness that stars Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut. Kanika and director Prakash Kovelamudi declared their split and stated they had already split up two years prior during the promotion of Judgemental Hai Kya.
Controversy
The film Raksha Bandhan (2022), for which Dhillon wrote the screenplay, was the target of a boycott campaign by right-wing Hindu nationalists on Twitter. The campaign was in response to Dhillon’s previous mocking remarks about the Modi government, some of which contained offensive references to gomutra and were later removed.
Kanika Dhillon Individual Life
Director Prakash Kovelamudi was Kanika’s first husband, whom she wed in 2014 and divorced in 2017. Kanika tied the knot with Himanshu Sharma in January 2021.
