Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the creator of the upcoming Indian Hindi-language period drama television series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. During the Indian independence fight against the British Raj, the show centres on the life of tawaifs in Lahore’s Heera Mandi red-light area. Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal are among its stars. Mitakshara Kumar and Bhansali are the directors.
The main photographic window was June 2022–June 2023. On May 1, 2024, the series will be available on Netflix.
Heeramandi, a drama about the lives of tawaifs in Lahore’s red-light district of Heera Mandi, is set against the backdrop of the 1940s Indian independence movement against the British Raj.
Award-winning filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s television series centres on the rivalry between Mallikajaan and Fareedan, two prominent courtesans, as they fight for control of Heeramandi, a thriving pre-partition Lahore hub for poetry, dances, and performing arts. Prior to this, Bhansali directed “Bajirao Mastani” and “Devdas,” which had its world premiere at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.
“Set in pre-independent India against the backdrop of the freedom movement, Heeramandi is an epic saga of love, power, betrayal, struggle and, ultimately, freedom,” according to Netflix.
