Guneet Monga is an Indian film producer who was born on November 21, 1983. The Elephant Whisperers, a 2023 Academy Award-winning documentary short film, was produced by her. The creator of Sikhya Entertainment, a small-scale film production company, is Monga. One of the first Indian producers to be accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was Monga in 2018. Guneet Monga worked on Period as an executive producer. The 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film went to End of Sentence. Monga was selected by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the top 12 female achievers in the global entertainment industry and by India Today as one of the top 50 Indians transforming India. For her work on the Netflix documentary short The Elephant Whisperers, Guneet was awarded her second Academy Award in 2023.

The French government awarded Guneet Monga the title of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts and des Lettres in 2021.

Born in Delhi, Guneet Monga attended Bluebells School International for her elementary education. In 2004, she graduated with a degree in public communication from Madhubala Institute of public Communication and Electronic Media, which is connected to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi.

Guneet Monga Career

Monga began her career as a production coordinator for international films, most notably Vic Sarin’s Partition, after working as an intern for a production coordinator in Delhi in 2003.

After witnessing Anureeta Saigal, a friend of her mother’s, work on international film production, Monga became enthralled with cinema. After interning with Saigal, she made the lifelong decision to pursue this career path. She persuaded a neighbour to lend her INR 75 lacs, or around US$188,000, in 2007 so she could produce films.

In 2006, she moved to Mumbai and began working on the cricket film Say Salaam India (2007). Dasvidaniya (2008) and Rang Rasiya (2008) came after this, as did Once Upon a Time in 2009 while it was being made.

Monga’s first significant international film was Kavi (2009), directed by Gregg Helvey and about bonded work in India. It was nominated for a 2010 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film and won the Student Academy Award – Narrative in 2009. Guneet Monga also launched a line production firm and her own production company, Sikhya Entertainment, in 2008.

She later collaborated with Anurag Kashyap on films including Trishna (2011), Shaitan (2011), Michael (2011), and Aiyya. Guneet Monga also worked on films such as Gangs of Wasseypur, Part I & II (2012) and That Girl in Yellow Boots (2011). By sharing the script for the movie on Facebook, she also generated around ₹10 million (US$120,000) for Peddlers (2012), which had a budget of Rs 2 cr.

Guneet Monga produced The Lunchbox, a project exhibited at Film Bazaar (2011), Cinemart (2012), Berlinale Co-Production Market (2012), and TorinoFilmLab (2012) as a co-production between India, France, Germany, and the United States, as well as Monsoon Shootout, a co-production between India, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.[Reference required]

When Monsoon Shootout and The Lunchbox (Dabba) were chosen for a midnight screening at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and Critics’ Week, respectively, in May 2013, The Hollywood Reporter named her one of the “most prolific producers of a new wave of cinema” and included her in their “2012 Women in Entertainment special” as one of the “12 international players to watch”; India Today has acknowledged her for revitalising independent film and bridging “the gap between Indian films and foreign buyers and distributors.”
