Born on December 15, 1988, freestyle wrestler Geeta Phogat became the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Additionally, she is the first female wrestler from India to qualify for the Summer Olympics.
Geeta Phogat Individual And Familial Life
In the Haryanan district of Charkhi Dadri, in the village of Balali, Geeta Phogat was born. Her coach is her father, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler who was also honored with a Dronacharya Award.

Both her cousin Vinesh Phogat and sister Babita Kumari had gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. In their respective categories, both took home gold medals from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Ritu Phogat, Geeta Phogat’s younger sister, is also a professional wrestler who took home a gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. Sangita Phogat, her younger sister, is a wrestler as well.
On November20,2016, she wed fellow wrestler Pawan Kumar. In December 2019, the couple gave birth to their first child, a son.

2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Title
At the 2009 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship, which took place in Jalandhar, Punjab, on December 19 and 21, Phogat took home the gold medal.
2010 Commonwealth Games
Against Australian Emily Bensted in the gold medal match, she won India’s first-ever gold medal in women’s wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, 1-0, 7-0.
2012 Summer Olympics
In April 2012, Phogat was victorious in the Wrestling FILA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, taking home the gold medal. At the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala, she received intense training with international specialist Ryan Dobo and head coach O.P. Yadav.

In her first bout, Tonya Verbeek, a Canadian, defeated Phogat 1-3 Since the Canadian advanced to the finals, she had an opportunity to take home the bronze medal. She lost her first match in the repechage round against Ukrainian Lazareva.
2012 World Championships in Wrestling
Phogat took home the bronze medal from the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, which took place in Canada.
Phogat defeated Russian fighter Maria Gurova 3:1 in the opening round. In the second round, Phogat lost to Japanese fighter Saori Yoshida 5 to 0. After the Japanese grappler advanced to the finals, Phogat competed in the repechage round. She won the bronze medal match 3:0 against Natalya Sinishin of Ukraine, after first defeating Kazakhstan’s Akziya Dautbayeva 3:1.
Asian Wrestling Championships in 2012
At the 2012 Asian Wrestling Championships, Phogat was defeated 5 to 0 by her Japanese opponent Kanako Murata in the opening round. Phogat was eligible to compete in the bronze medal round because the Japanese grappler advanced to the finals. He defeated Mongolian wrestler Sumiya Erdenechimeg 3:1 to win the bronze medal in the 55 kg weight class.
Championships for Commonwealth Wrestling in 2013
Phogat lost the championship match to Oluwafunmilayo Adeniyi of Nigeria, but she went on to finish second and take home the silver medal in the women’s freestyle 59 kg division at the tournament in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Asian Wrestling Championships in 2015
Along with Aiym Abdildina of Kazakhstan, Phogat placed third and took home the bronze in the freestyle 58 kg class at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha. She was paired against Japanese fighter Kaori Icho, a nine-time world champion, at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, and fell to her in the first round 0–10. Phogat was offered the opportunity to compete in the bronze medal repechage when Icho advanced to the finals. She was defeated by Elif Jale Yeşilırmak of Turkey 0–10 once more.
Geeta Phogat Culture In Popular Culture
Dangal, starring Aamir Khan, is mostly based on the life of Geeta Phogat and her sister. In the film, Zaira Wasim portrays her younger self, while Fatima Sana Shaikh plays her. After being screened and chosen to play Babita Phogat in the film, a role she was unable to play because of an injury, wrestler Pooja Dhanda went on to defeat older Phogat sister Geeta Phogat in the real-life national championship.
