2016 saw the premiere of Sen’s first full-length documentary, Cities of Sleep, which was supported by the Films Division of India and described as a “sensitive unpacking of the geographies of homelessness and sleep in Delhi”. The movie was screened at the Mumbai International Film Festival, Taiwan International Documentary Festival, and the 16th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival . Sen’s second feature-length documentary, All That Breathes, debuted in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2022. Raised in New Delhi, Saud and Nadeem, two brothers, watched as family members threw meat up to the black kites that dotted the sky. Muslims believed that by feeding the kites, problems would be banished. Currently, birds are dropping from New Delhi’s hazy, dirty skies, and the two brothers have made it their mission to tend to the injured black kites.

One juror stated, “This poetic film delivers an urgent political story while constructing a singular and loving portrait of protagonists resisting seemingly inevitable ecological disaster – with humorous touches punctuated by unsentimental depiction of the animal kingdom.” The documentary went on to win the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

Additionally, the documentary took home the L’Œil d’or (Golden Eye), the highest honor given to documentaries, at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in 2022. The jury’s statement said, “In a world of destruction, the Golden Eye goes to a film that reminds us that every life matters and every small action matters.” It important that you take your camera, save a bird, and search for fleeting moments of breathtaking beauty. It’s a voyage filled with inspiration as you follow three Don Quixotes who, while they might not save the entire world, they do save their own.”

HBO declared that it has purchased the documentary’s worldwide broadcast rights after seeing All That Breathes at Cannes. HBO Max released the film after its theatrical debut in the United States via Submarine Deluxe and Sideshow.
