Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani is a designer. Tarun Tahiliani co-founded the multi-designer shop Ensemble in 1987 and the Tahiliani Design studio in 1990 alongside his wife Sailaja ‘Sal’ Tahiliani. Tarun Tahiliani is based in Delhi and is renowned for his ability to combine fitted silhouettes with Indian craftsmanship and textile tradition.

His trademark is fusing modern design with ancient aesthetics. Tarun Tahiliani developed a reputation over time for his wedding gowns as well. Tahiliani has recently embarked on a number of interior design jobs. He has created interior designs for residences, resorts, restaurants (like The Sofala in Goa), hotels (like The Sofala in Goa), homes, and even started doing event designs for Indian weddings.

Tahiliani was raised in an extended Sindhi family in Mumbai, where she was born. His sister Tina Tahiliani and family were sent to different parts of India because their father, Admiral R H Tahiliani, was stationed there. After attending Campion School in Mumbai at first, his father was transferred to Delhi while he was a teenager. He then enrolled in The Doon School, a boarding school in Dehradun, where he eventually graduated in 1980.
Following his education, he enrolled as an honours student at Delhi’s St. Stephen’s College. But after a year, he left because he didn’t think it was difficult enough. He then travelled to the US, where he spent a year studying at Vassar College in New York and eventually earned a degree in business management.

Subsequently, his father held the positions of Governor of Sikkim from 1990 to 1994 and Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy from 1984 to 1987. His mother, Jaswanti Tahiliani, attended VJTI in Mumbai and was the first female engineer in the city. A few years after she passed away from cancer while he was still a student at Doon School, his father got married again.
He met his future wife, Sailaja (Sal), an economics student at the University of Pennsylvania, while studying in the US thanks to a mutual friend. Not long after his return to India, they were married. Sal, who grew up in New York, headed Tahiliani’s retail operations after having a brief stint as a model, even doing work for Pierre Cardin.
He initially joined the family’s oil-field equipment business after returning to India. Eventually, with the assistance of designer Rohit Khosla, he and Sailaja launched Ensemble, a multi-designer store, in Mumbai in 1987. The collection included pieces by five designers: Anita Shivdasani, Sunita Kapoor, the wife of Anil Kapoor, and her own label, Ahilian; Rohit Khosla, Anuradha Mafatlal, American fashion designer Neil Bieff, and label Anaya.
Tarun Tahiliani had begun to draw by this point, but he was still untrained as a designer, so in 1991 he enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York to further his studies in design. Tahiliani oversees the Ensemble network alongside his sister Tina Tahiliani Parikh, who joined the company in 1990. The ensemble group comprises outlets in Delhi and Mumbai.
In addition, Tarun collaborated with Save the Children India to push the government to raise the health budget to three percent prior to the release of the budget.
