Washington Sundar, an Indian cricket player who represents his country, was born on October 5, 1999. On October 5, 1999, Washington Sundar was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil Hindu family. His father, M. Sundar, gave him the name in remembrance of P.D. Washington, who had supported the elder Sundar’s love of cricket. Shailaja Sundar, his sister, is a professional cricket player. On October 6, 2016, he made his Tamil Nadu first-class debut in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy. Similar to Tamil Nadu’s Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar began his career as a batsman before becoming well-known as an offspinner. In the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy match between Tamil Nadu and Tripura, in October 2017, he made his first-class century at bat. In 2016, he was also picked for the India U-19 World Cup.

Washington Sundar was chosen by Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 to take Ravichandran Ashwin’s place. On April 22, 2017, he made his Twenty20 league debut for the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2017 Indian Premier League. In the first IPL 2017 qualifier between the Mumbai Indians and Pune Supergiants, he got three wickets for sixteen runs and was named man of the match. In the 2018 Indian Premier League auction in January, he was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Washington Sundar was added to India C’s squad for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy in October 2018.

Sundar was acquired for ₹8.75 crores by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2022 Indian Premier League auction. Sundar participated in the County Championship and the Royal London One-Day Cup for Lancashire County Cricket Club in August 2022. In his first game against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, he took five wickets.

was included in the Indian Twenty20 International (T20I) team for their series against Sri Lanka in November 2017. Washington Sundar was also included in the Indian One Day International (ODI) team for the same series early in the following month, following Kedar Jadhav’s hamstring injury. On December 13, 2017, he played his first-ever ODI for India against Sri Lanka. clean bowled Lahiru Thirimanne, becoming his maiden wicket in international cricket. On December24,2017, Sundar made his India T20I debut against Sri Lanka. Washington Sundar made his T20I debut for India as the youngest player ever, at eighteen years and eighty days.

Washington Sundar was included in India’s squad to play Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy in March 2018. Many people commended him for his frugal bowling during the powerplay, which cost less than six runs each over. He became the youngest T20I player ever to take three wickets in a match when he claimed his first one throughout the series. Because of his performance, he was awarded the player of the series. After that, he started playing regularly for the Indian Twenty20 squad.

Sundar was only selected as a net bowler for India’s 2020–21 Australia tour; however, he unexpectedly won his first Test cap on January 15, in the series’ final Test match at The Gabba, thanks to multiple bowler injuries and India’s inability to quickly bring in replacements because of quarantine restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic Steve Smith was his first Test wicket.
He scored 62 in his opening innings of the test and had a vital wicket partnership of 123 with Shardul Thakur, which prevented India from falling behind badly in the first innings and played a significant role in India’s ultimate victory. Sundar became just the third Indian player to reach fifty runs in his first Test match in Australia with his maiden fifty.
