Indian wrestler Babita Kumari Phogat, who was born on November 20, 1989, took home the gold medal from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She also took home silver from the 2010 and 2018 Commonwealth Games, as well as a bronze from the 2012 World Wrestling Championships. Babita is the younger sister of Geeta Phogat, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist who brought home India’s first women’s wrestling gold. Babita is the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler and holder of the Dronacharya Award. Vinesh Phogat, her cousin, competed in the 48 kg division and won gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Babita has, together with her sister and cousin, helped to shift the national and home state of Haryana’s perspective and attitude toward women and girls. Ritu Phogat, her younger sister, is also a competitive wrestler on the world front and the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship gold medallist. Sangita Phogat, her younger sister, is a wrestler as well.
Babita Kumari revealed her engagement to fellow wrestler Vivek Suhag in June 2019, and the two eventually were married in November of the same year. On Monday, August 12, 2019, Babita Phogat became a member of the BJP, but she lost her maiden election. On January 11, 2021, she and her spouse welcomed a baby boy into their family.

2010 Commonwealth Games
In the women’s freestyle 51 kg division at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Babita took home the silver medal following her 0–2, 4–5 loss to Nigeria’s Ifeoma Christi Nwoye in the gold medal match.

In the 48 kg women’s freestyle division, Babita took home the gold medal from the competition in Melbourne, Australia.
2012 World Championships in Wrestling
Babita fought Taipei’s Hsin-Ju Chiu in the Round of 16 of the 2012 World Wrestling Championships, and she defeated him 5 to 0. She defeated Japanese opponent Risako Kawai 5 to 0 in the quarterfinals to get to the semi-finals. In the semifinals, she was defeated 1:3 by Canadian Jessica Anne Marie MacDonald. She was subsequently given the opportunity to compete for the bronze medal, which she obtained by defeating Russian Zamira Rakhmanova 5:0 in the women’s freestyle 51 kg division.

Along with Han Kum-ok of North Korea, Babita took home the bronze in the women’s freestyle 55 kg division at the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships held in New Delhi, India.
2014 Commonwealth Games
Babita defeated Kathryn Marsh of Scotland in the women’s freestyle 55 kg quarterfinals of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, winning 9–2, 4–0 (classification points 4:1). Louisa Porogovska of England was her opponent in the semifinals, and she defeated her 2 to 0 (classification points 5:0)—victory by fall, in wrestling lingo. She faced off against Canadian Brittanee Laverdure in the gold medal match, which she won 5–0, 4–2 (classification points: 3:1).
Asian Games 2014
Babita failed to duplicate her Commonwealth Games achievement in Incheon, South Korea during the 2014 Asian Games. She met Mongolia’s Srey Mao Dorn in the Round of 16 in the women’s freestyle 55 kg competition, which she won 5 to 0. She met Kazakhstan’s Aiym Abdildina in the quarterfinals, and she defeated her 3:1. In the semifinals, she fell to Japan’s Olympic champion Saori Yoshida 0:4. She was allowed to compete for the bronze medal, but she was defeated by Chinese player Xuechun Zhong .
Asian Wrestling Championships in 2015
After defeating Zukhra Mustanova of Uzbekistan by the same score in the qualification round, Babita defeated Abdy Kadyrova Elsa of Kyrgyzstan 10–0 in the quarterfinal of the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships. Babita was eliminated from the tournament after losing to North Korean Pak Yong-Mi in the final five seconds of her semifinal match.

In the bronze medal play-off, Babita was defeated 3–6 by Kazakhstan’s Zhuldyz Eshimova-Turtbayeva, spoiling her hopes of finishing on the podium.
Rio Olympics 2016
Babita was India’s third and last competitor in the women’s wrestling competition at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in 2016. She and her cousin Vinesh Phogat represented India. After her opponent in the qualifying event failed a drug test and India was awarded the quota, she was granted entry to the Rio Games. Babita lost 0–5 in the opening round.
2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast
In the women’s 53 kg freestyle wrestling competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Babita Kumari Phogat took home the silver medal.

The movie Dangal, which came out on December 23, 2016, is mostly based on her and her sister’s tale. Sanya Malhotra played Babita, while Suhani Bhatnagar played the younger version of the character.

Babita Kumari claimed to have been greatly influenced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in August 2019.In the October 2019 Haryana assembly elections, she was defeated by Sombir Sangwan from Dadri (a Haryana Vidhan Sabha constituency).
