In 2003, she debuted in the horror movie Sssshhh… and achieved her first breakthrough with the political crime thriller Sarkar, as well as its follow-up Sarkar Raj, in which she starred in a supporting capacity. A downturn in career followed this. Tanishaa Mukerji debuted on television in 2013 when she competed in Colours TV’s reality series Bigg Boss 7, placing first runner-up.

On March 3, 1978, in Mumbai, Mukerji was born into the family of renowned actress Tanuja, the wife of Bengali Hindu film director Shomu Mukherjee, and Bollywood star Kajol’s younger sister. Tanishaa Mukerji dated Armaan Kohli, her Bigg Boss 7 housemate, for a year before their October 2014 breakup.

Her breakthrough role in Bollywood came in the thriller-slasher Sssshhh…, costarring Dino Morea and Karan Nath. It was not well received. Bollywood Hungama’s Taran Adarsh criticised the film, saying, “Sssshhh? a weak screenplay with excessive length and, most importantly, a half-baked climax” and added, “Mukerji needs to work on her dialogue delivery along with her screen appearance”.

Both critically and financially, the movie was a disaster. Popcorn Khao, a romantic comedy, is her upcoming release! When Mast Ho Jao (2004) debuted, film was met with unfavourable reviews from critics and did poorly at the box office. Under the production company Yash Raj Films, she acted in the romantic comedy Neal ‘n’ Nikki in 2005, alongside Uday Chopra.

When the movie debuted on December 9, 2005, it was met with mostly poor reviews from critics and was a box office flop. A critic stated, “Neal ‘n’ Nikki concentrates more on skin show than a sound story terrible letdown in terms of content” .

Tanishaa Mukerji costarred with a large ensemble cast in the political crime thriller Sarkar in a supporting role as Avantika that same year. On July 1, 2005, the movie debuted to favourable reviews and quickly achieved commercial success. In 2005, she was last seen in the war movie Tango Charlie, starring alongside Bobby Deol. This became her fourth consecutive box office setback. In 2007, she returned to Tamil cinema with the romantic musical film Unnale Unnale, starring Vinay Rai, after a two-year hiatus.

Tanishaa Mukerji starred opposite Upen Patel in the comedy One Two Three in 2008. This also failed to open well at the box office. She returned to the part in Sarkar Raj, the second film in the Sarkar film series, that same year. The follow-up similarly achieved critical and financial success.

Bigg Boss with more projects (2013–present)

She returned to the spotlight by competing in the television reality series Bigg Boss 7, finishing as the first runner-up. Later, she appeared on the stand-up comedy programme Gangs of Haseepur as one of the judges. Tanishaa Mukerji took part in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7 in 2016 and advanced to the finals. She competed in the dancing reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 11 on Sony TV, placing thirteenth overall.
