Indian actress and former model Sonam Khan (born Bakhtavar Khan; September 2, 1972) is well-known for her roles in Telugu and Bollywood films. Her grandmother is the seasoned performer Murad.

Most of the top actors of the era, including Govinda, Raj Babbar, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Naseeruddin Shah, Govinda, Chunky Pandey, Rishi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Chiranjeevi, and Jackie Shroff, were partnered with her. Vijay, Tridev, Mitti Aur Sona, Lashkar, Kroadh, Kodama Simham, Ajooba, and Vishwatma are a few of her well-known films. From 1987 until 1994, she starred in more than 35 motion pictures.
Sonam Khan Career
1987–1988: Premiere and major success
Sonam’s parents, Talat Khan and Mushir Khan, gave her the name Bakhtavar. Yash Chopra proposed the screen name “Sonam” for her. In 1987, she made her debut with Ramesh Babu in the Telugu film Samrat. Yash Chopra introduced her to Bollywood with the 1988 film Vijay, in which she starred alongside Rishi Kapoor.
1989–1994: Growth as a professional
In 1989, Sonam released nine albums. The song “Oye Oye…Tirchi Topi Wale” from the movie Tridev catapulted her to stardom. She received praise for her delicate performance in Mitti Aur Sona.
In 1990, Sonam had 10 releases, including the successful box office movie Kroadh, her lone Bengali film Mandira, and the massively successful Telugu movie Kodama Simham starring Chiranjeevi. One of the priciest movies of its era, Ajooba, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dimple Kapadia, and Rishi Kapoor, was her maiden release in 1991. That year, she released seven further films, the best-performing of which was Fateh, starring Sanjay Dutt.

Sonam Khan worked with Naseeruddin Shah for the third and final time, on the high-profile film Vishwatma, in 1992. Following her marriage, she acted in a few select films, including Insaaf Apne Lahoo Se (1994) with Sanjay Dutt, Police Wala (1993) with Chunky Pandey, and Baaz (1992) with Govinda.
Sonam Khan Individual Life
Sonam wed director Rajiv Rai in 1991; Rai had previously helmed her in Tridev and Vishwatma. Rai was the son of Gulshan Rai, a film producer and the man behind Trimurti Films. After getting married, she changed her religion from Islam to Hinduism, gave up acting, and focused her time on her family. Gaurav Rai, the son of Sonam and Rai, was identified as autistic at a young age. She disclosed in an interview that she traveled throughout the globe for her son’s medical care for the most of her time.
Sonam and Rai moved to Europe after living in Los Angeles for a while. But things went south in the marriage, and in 2001 they called it quits. Sonam and Rai officially separated. 2016—15 years after their breakup.
Sonam Khan made her first appearance in public in thirty years in November 2023 at the Jio World Plaza event in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Khan, who lives in Mumbai with her son Gaurav, is getting ready to make a comeback to the big screen.
