Born on March 21, 1970 , Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai is an Indian actress and Bharatanatyam dancer. In addition to Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and English films, she primarily appears in Malayalam films. Shobana has received fourteen nominations for the Best Actress category in three different south Indian languages, two National Film Awards, one Kerala State Film Award, and two Filmfare Awards South.
In addition to receiving multiple other honors, the Tamil Nadu State Government bestowed upon her the Kalaimamani in 2011. Over the course of her more than 40-year career, Shobana has acted in 230 films in various languages. For her roles in the English film Mitr, My Friend (2001) and the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu (1993), she was twice awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress.

In addition, Shobhana is a Bharatanatyam dancer who trained under Padma Subrahmanyam and Chitra Visweswaran. In her twenties, she became a successful solo performer and choreographer. She currently owns and operates Kalarpana, a dance school in Chennai.[6] She received the Padma Shri award from the Indian government in 2006 in recognition of her services to the arts.
For her services to the performing arts, she was awarded the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (commonly known as Kalarathna) in 2013. Shobana was awarded honorary doctorates by the Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute in 2019, the Vinayaka Mission Research Foundation in 2018, and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in 2022.

Shobana began her career as a young artist. In 1980, she played a significant part in Krishnan-Panju’s Tamil film Mangala Nayagi, which was a remake of the Hindi classic Saajan Bina Suhagan and starred Srikanth and K. R. Vijaya. For this film, she was awarded the Best Child Artiste Award.
She also had a role in the 1982 Telugu movie Bhakta Dhruva Markendaya, which was a critically praised Telugu and Tamil all-children’s movie. Director Balachandra Menon’s Malayalam film April 18 (1984) served as her mature introduction to the film industry. Audiences responded favorably to her genuine portrayal of the everyday girl next door, and she went on to appear in a number more movies. She made her debut in the Tamil cinema industry that same year, appearing in SP Muthuraman’s Enakkul Oruvan (1984).
Enakkul Oruvan’s box office performance was lackluster, and Shobana’s return to Malayalam cinema caused her commercial landing to falter. She did return to acting in sporadic Tamil films in the early 1990s, starring opposite Vijayakanth (Ponmana Selvan, En Kitta Mothathey), Bhagyaraj (Ithu Namma Aalu), and Satyaraj (Mallu Vetti Minor, Vaathiyar Veetu Pillai). These roles were typically glamorous, with Shobana playing the beautiful, haughty, and conceited city girl who is eventually charmed by the village boy.

The best performers in Tollywood, including Nandamuri Balakrishna, Venkatesh, Chiranjeevi, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Mohan Babu, Rajendra Prasad, and many others, have been on film alongside her. She costarred with Mega Star Chiranjeevi as the classical dancer Lalitha Sivajyothi in Rudraveena (1984), where she is a caste below and is not allowed to enter the temple. In 2001, she was given her second National Film Award for Best Actress, this time for her performance in the Revathi-directed Indian English film Mitr, My Friend. In 1989, she founded “Kalipinya,” her own dance school, which she registered in 1992.
