Indian actress Seema Biswas was born on January 14, 1965, and is active in both theater and Hindi cinema. Seema Biswas rose to fame in Shekhar Kapur’s 1994 film Bandit Queen, when she portrayed Phoolan Devi and took home the National Film Award for Best Actress.

For her performance as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta’s Water (2005), she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2000 and the Best Actress Genie Award in 2006. Her other popular movies are Bhoot (2003), Vivah (2006), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), for which she received the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Half Girlfriend (2017). In addition to movies, Biswas has made numerous TV appearances.

In Nalbari, Assam, Biswas was born into a Bengali family to Jagdish and Meera Biswas. Seema Biswas attended Nalbari College in Assam for her elementary schooling and then earned an honors degree in political science there. She attended the National School of Drama in New Delhi to study dramatic arts.

In Krishnan Kartha’s Amshini (Hindi), Biswas portrayed the lead role. The film was selected for the 1988 Filmotsav Indian Panorama Section. The conventional wisdom, however, holds that she made her stage debut after Shekhar Kapur saw her perform with the NSD Repertory Company and extended an offer for her to play Bandit Queen. Despite her prior experience acting in Assamese films, this marked her major breakthrough into the Hindi film industry.

Seema Biswas received the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996 for her performance as Flavy, a deaf and silent woman, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Khamoshi: The Musical, which starred Nana Patekar.

With a strong foundation in theater, she defies stereotypes and has acted in a number of movies and character parts. She has also contributed to Tamil, Malayalam, and Marathi cinema. Her Marathi films include Dhyaas Parwa, Bindhast, and Lalbaug-Parel.[Reference required]

The director Sandeep Marwah has bestowed upon her the title of Life Membership in the International Film and Television Club of the Asian Academy of Film & Television.[Reference required] In 2014, Biswas served on the jury for the 45th International Film Festival of India, which took place in Goa from November 20 to November 30.
