Shetty, who was up in Bangalore and attended college studying computer engineering, had an interest in fashion shows. His parents are Tulu and Telugu. Fashion choreographer Prasad Bidapa first hired Shetty as a model in the mid-2000s, and she later competed in the Miss Bangalore 2004 pageant. Later, in 2006, Sanam made the decision to focus on a career as a software engineer, working for organisations like Tata Consultancy Services. In order to continue working in the UK, he temporarily relocated there.

While working on amateur documentaries while she was overseas, Sanam developed an interest in acting roles. Sanam played a young college student who is entangled in strange events in a village during the 1970s. In February 2012, the movie debuted to acclaim following a low-key theatrical run. Sanam kept getting requests to act and finished a string of low-key films that didn’t do well at the box office, such as Ajit Ravi Pegasus’s bilingual Tamil-Malayalam production Ravu (2013), Maayai (2013), and Vilaasam (2014).

She had a supporting role in the Mammootty-starring Daivathinte Swantham Cleetus (2014), one of the most well-known films she was in at the time. Sanam was also slated to play a “NRI rockstar with a very modern outlook” in legendary filmmaker K. Raghavendra Rao’s Telugu film Intinta Anamayya, marking her Telugu cinema debut. Nevertheless, the movie was never released, even after production was finished. She had also agreed to star as a martial arts expert in Aabavanan’s female-centric movie, but the project was eventually cancelled.

Sanam kept making appearances in low-budget films in the four South Indian cinema industries by the middle of the decade. The action movie Katham Katham (2015), the comic drama Vellaiya Irukiravan Poi Solla Maatan (2015), and the horror movie Sadhuram 2 (2016) were among her noteworthy Tamil films during that time. Proposed parts in high-profile films, such Susi Ganesan’s Thiruttu Payale 2 (2015), however, never came to pass. Sanam played lead parts in the comedic flicks Singam 123 (2015) and Premikudu (2016), as well as a brief role with Mahesh Babu in Srimanthudu (2015).

Alongside rookie Pavan Teja, Sanam starred in her first Kannada film, Atharva (2018). Her debut picture as a producer, Magie, which tells the story of a child raised in Meghalaya, was released in 2017. But after she had a falling out with main actor Tharshan, the production was shelved.

After Meera Mithun was disqualified from the Miss South India 2016 competition due to fraudulent acts, Sanam was finally named the winner in 2019. Actor Tharshan Thiyagarajah and Sanam Shetty got engaged in May 2019, and their wedding was scheduled for June 2019. The ceremony was later rescheduled due to Tharshan’s participation in the 2019 Bigg Boss Tamil season, and the couple later called off their engagement in late 2019. Later, Sanam reported Tharshan to the police for misusing her money.
